I have a Dell Inspiron - 530 running Windows 7 which has an Asus DRW-2481ST DVD-RW that quit working and Windows does not see it.

I changed it out with a new one, no joy.
I replaced the cable, no joy.
I tried the DVD software that came with it, "Device driver was not successfully installed."
I removed the device from the Device Manager, no joy.
I search for a new driver in Device Manager, no joy.

Tried to install the driver using Asus utility and got the following message "No matched drive detected".

Also, the Device Mgr does see it.

Any ideas?

First, there are no drivers other than the built in Microsoft/Windows drivers for any CD/DVD drive.

A different brand won't work any better than the two you have now.

There are two motherboard chipset drivers listed on the Dell downloads for the I530. An Intel and a Dell. Install both of these, restart the PC, and see if it helps. If a chipset driver is missing or corrupt you could have devices that do not work, one of the prime things the chipset drivers do is define (identify) all the hardware devices on and attached to the motherboard. On a new install on a Dell, the correct and required install is (1) Install Windows (2) Install Dell desktop or laptop (as applicable) system software (3) Install motherboard chipset drivers (4) Install device drivers including video, Dell sound, ethernet, etc.

The Drivers on the Dell site are for Vista 32 bit or 64 bit, there is no official Windows 7 support for this model but the Vista drivers work for Win 7.

Ran the update utility and said all was proper but also went to http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_ ... inf+update and updated the chip.

Still doesn't show in My Computer but does show in Device Mgr even after I remove it. That's what it has done from the start of this.

Can you say "external DVD Rom"...... Don't want to give up but I'm about as far as I can go unless you have more to try.

Got it!

First - In device manager, hit view --> show hidden devices. Are there any hidden/non-plug and play devices that aren't functioning properly? And what is the complete error message in device status on the DVD drive?

Then I found this http://pcsupport.about.com/od/findbyerr ... -error.htm

I tried #6 "Delete the UpperFilters and LowerFilters values in the registry"
and it WORKED!!!!!!

Thanks for the posts and I hope this may help someone else in the future.
