DVD Shrink/Rip Programs

Anyone know a good DVD Shrink and Rip-to-harddrive programs compatible with Windows 7? I had DVD Shrink 3.2 when I had Vista and installed it again when I installed 7 and it crashed my comp...had to reinstall 7. Any suggestions? Thanks.

It uses RipIt4Me (DVD Decrypter + FixVTS) + DVD Shrink + ImgBurn

If you dont want the output to VOB, the best two options are

HandBrake

virtualdub

Those two supports h264 ... so you get good quality of rip in a lesser space .

I use the free version of DVDFab to rip my DVD's and Handbrake to encode them to MKV (x264 + AC3/DTS passthru).

I use DVD Shrink on Windows 7, never had any trouble with it since using it in Compatibility mode (Windows XP SP3).

Right click on the DVD Shrink program icon > Properties > Compatibility > Compatibility mode > Windows XP SP3.

The above method works for me but can't say for definite it'll work for you, try at your own risk.

I'm running DVD Shrink on Windows 7 64-bit and having no problems at all. I only use it to shrink the file. Typically use DVD Fab Decrypter to actually rip the file first.

+1. Using it on W7 32 bit.

A DVD9 to DVD5 shrinker with better quality is DVD Rebuilder. There's a free and a Pro version. The Pro version allows you to run a copy of the video encoder per core. For example HC Encoder. Another nice feature is .avs conversion of letterbox 4:3 dvd to 16x9. I've started using it to convert a lot of dvds I bought in the 90s before 16x9 anamorphic was the norm(many Hong Kong films were letterboxed.) Using HC "normal" profile on my quad I can process a 90 minute movie in about 35 minutes. If you use HC "best" profile figure on doubling the time for a bit better quality.

Good answers, first off all, DVD Shrink worked fine for me on my system (look at my specs for details), if it does not work just run it under compatibility mode like one the answers said.

If you do not know much about DVDs and want an easy program try this.

Magic DVD Ripper - rip DVD to hard drive or blank DVD

Try to keep the movie under 3 hours, every time i go over 3 hours on a 4.7GB disk it gets all pix-elated, it also depends on how good the compression is with the program.

Personally, I would prefer to convert my DVDs and BDs into ISOs, mount them on a virtual drive and play them as I would the originals. Saves your discs and optical drives. Large external HDDs are cheap enough now.

^ You mean,....and a few.... like Smart Ripper, my first love? Hmmmmm..........its all there in my archive but too deep to dig out.

When I did dig out Ripit4me and installed it on Windows 7 today, it said "no optical drive found or it is locked". When I invoked AnyDVD, it straightened out its tail and behaved like a prodigal son returned.

If we're talking BluRay then add BD Rebuilder to go with DVD Rebuilder. BD Rebuilder is not a ripper. But you can rip with MakeMKV. BD Rebuilder can now output to standard DVD for those times when you want to play on a DVD player.
Like DVD Rebuilder, it uses HC encode for standard DVD encoding.

For 264 it produces excellent BD5 structures. I just rename the .m2ts file and copy it to a drive for play on WD USB player. It also has avs filter option if you need to burn in subs. My WD player will use external .srt or .idx/.sub but if you do more than Pause they will go out of sync. Sometimes I just burn them in to be done with it.

Previously, I had a PC running Windows Vista and was using DVD Shrink and Nero to rip and burn DVDs. On the whole, this system worked 95% of the time. The other 5% I chuck it up to DVD encryption protection, etc.

I recently had to replace my old PC with a new one that runs Windows 7 64-bit. I installed DVD Shrink 3.2.0.15 in my new PC but I have been unable to backup DVDs. DVD Shrink is able to open the disc in the drive. Then, when I try to back it up, the furthest I have gotten was 8%. Then, the window turns black and stalls.

Things I have tried: I've set compatibility to Vista (my previous OS) and also Windows XP Sp3 (which someone recommended here). I also tried with and without Data Execution Prevention (DEP) being set except for Shrink. I rebooted as well. Also tried uninstalling and reinstalling Shrink.

There might be a specific combination that will work? If someone can provide a step-by-step to install Shrink as well as set it up for proper use in Windows 7 64-Bit, I would be eternally grateful.

DVD Shrink works fine with Windows 7. That being said, I rarely use it. I have DVDfab and their new Passkey app, both free, that handle the ripping, and Handbrake to do the encoding.

^ Correct me if I am wrong.

1. DVD Passkey is not free but costs USD40.

2. Even if you use the Free DVDFab HD decrypter, you do not need DVD Passkey. (The decrypter takes care, to make the DVD region free and also of any copy protection measures )
