After upgrading to Windows 7 on my Gateway desktop I now have a blue colored rectange with the letters DVI appearing at random intervals. How do I stop this from recurring
Sounds like your display is searching for a connection from the DVI port. How is your computer connected to the display? Is the display set for auto or is it set manually for the type of connection you're using?
What is the make and model number of your monitor? This sounds like a monitor issue. Check the monitor manual for details on how to disable the OSD popups.

I removed the blue plug, leaving the white plug in the tower, result no change same blue colored rectangle in center of screen with DVI white letters returned for a few minutes then disappears and returns at random.
Your OSD menu buttons are on the right side of your monitor, change the input select to DVI (it may be set to auto), the manual is linked below. Can you try the monitor on another computer that allows you to plug it in with the white (DVI) plug?
