dxgmms1.sys atikmpag.sys BSOD

Hello,
We have a new Dell Alienware machine that has been randomly crashing since day 1. Sometimes the display temporarily freezes and we get a system message saying that the "AMD driver stopped responding and has successfully recovered". Other times the screen goes completely gray accompanied by a loud buzzer sound and we have no choice but to force the system off. There's no discernable pattern as to what activities cause it. It may occur browsing simple web pages (no heavy games or videos), checking Outlook e-mail, or simply at startup.

Since the system is but a few weeks old, we'd expect to have the most recent drivers. However, we did try installing the full Catalyst Software Suite for our graphics card directly from AMD with no improvement.

I'm attaching our latest dumps and performance report per your instructions. According to BlueScreenView, dxgmms1.sys appeared in 12 of the 13 dumps, and atikmpag.sys in 8 of the 13.

Any help you can provide would be GREATLY appreciated. I'd hate to have to return this system to Dell and cut our losses on all the time we've wasted.

Based on what I'm seeing I'm going to suggest a complete wipe of the ati drivers with driver sweeper. Then installing the latest ones directly from the amd/ati website.

Since it's an alienware it may also have come with a overclock already on it, which could be the source of problems as well.

very often the problems persist from one installation of the drivers to the next because the offending part of the driver package is not being removed by the standard remove feature.

Hi Maguscreed, unfortunately the problem persists.

I followed the instructions on the driversweeper page: First uninstalled the display driver from Device Manager; rebooted in safe mode then ran driver sweeper; rebooted and installed driver from AMD site. After rebooting, started watching CNN news video in browser, paused video and walked away to answer a call. After returning 10 min later, screen was black and unresponsive. Had to force shutdown. But in this case there's no memory dump file to analyze.

You mentioned that overclocking may be responsible. What's the best way to tell if my system's been overclocked?

well the graphics card is inconclusive but I see no evidence of anything else being overclocked.

No doubt they are trying to point at the ati driver, or possibly the card itself...
They're pretty much all the same.

In the catalyst control panel on the overdrive tab. Has overdrive been activated?

I'm including the driver dump information in case one of the others sees something I missed there, but it would appear you are properly up to date for most if not all of your drivers.

It appears (to me, anyway) that overdrive is enabled in the Catalyst Control Center (see below), but am unable to uncheck it. Also, hoping you could help me interpret what i'm looking at in CPU-Z. I would have thought by looking at the CPU tab above that the processor is overclocked since it's above the rated 3.2. I find that the core speed will fluctuate; sometimes it reads as high as 3475.

the i7 970 chip has a 'turbo' feature that gives you basically +/- 200 mhz, this is normal for that particular chip.
Overdrive is still locked so even though it's checked it's not applying any additional properties to the card right now.

At this point I would suggest contacting alienware, as I know they include their own software on their machines and I haven't had personal experience with that software in years, so I can't give you step by step instructions with it.

At this point it would seem the problem is based either with the graphics card itself or their software interfering with the ati kernel and causing the driver to crash. Which of these is the case I can not say based on the information in the minidumps. I can tell you that the error is the same in all 8 of them I looked over though.

One more question for you, if I may. In case we can't resolve this issue and end up returning it to Dell, what is your personal preferred vendor for stable high-performance machines? We need it primarily for running 3D modeling software and image rendering.

Honestly you are best off finding a person familiar with high spec gear and having it built for you without any of the extra pre-installed junk on it you get from the large vendors. I'm sure the people here would be quite helpful in helping you order the parts, piecing together a computer is probably not nearly as scary as you think it is, and you'll save at least 30% on cost.
