EA in a Nutshell

I found this on another gaming forum that I frequent and since nobody has posted it here yet, at least as far as I know, I figured that I'd leave it here. As you can tell by the title, it's about EA's...questionable practices. Since I've seen some raging about EA here, I figured some here would find it interesting.

No love for them here. Their employees had to launch two class actions lawsuits (1, 2) for unpaid overtime.

Also, recent 2012 article on Electronic Arts being voted the Most Evil Company in America. Wow, wtf? So they're not just evil compared to other software publishers, but all other industries? Like, Big Oil, telcos, banks (omg what does it take to be a larger douchebag than the crooks at the banking industry?!?!) and those criminals at Wall Street?

Holy. F***ing. Sheet.

Sorry, yes, the OP is to be thanked... mea culpa!

But EA is not the only Bad Monster here, look at UBIsoft and the new Ghost Recon Future Soldier... the game is not but two weeks old and the fanbois are all up in arms.

But you know what gets me... all these fanbois will wait in line for the next UBI title next month.

Yeah and Activision too with all the recycling of the same game engine and small tweaks to the cod franchise and putting a bunch of DLC that could have been in the game in the first place since they already had like 5 dlc packs ready one for each month when the game released.

Yea usually EA does a half assed done game.

It's worse than that. EA is not a developer at all, just a publisher. A publisher with high enough power to close a whole developer studio if a game release doesn't live up to their expectations (Pandemic Studios' "The Saboteur" anyone? :() or just keeps forcing developers to roll out new titles and DLCs as soon as possible to make more money (Bioware's "Dragon Age 2" and pretty much all DLC campaigns after DAO: Awakening; the whole Mass Effect 3 in-game unlockable DLC scandal, sports games being recycled every year etc.)

BUT! I've always had hope for companies like Steam to put a stop to these shenanigans of publishers like EA and Activision. From the first moment I heard about the Steambox my spirits soared high - I still believe that Steam will one day rule the world of gaming and how it's consumed. Most knowledgeable gamers today use Steam anyway, for well-known advantages, and (at least for the PC platform) EA's Origin is and never will be nowhere near Steam's popularity. It's not just because Origin has EA published games only mostly (those Indie game packs make me sick, and not because of the games themselves) but exactly because people know what EA is like, and any developer who consigns to EA's practices and does any kind of deal with them is either already successful enough to not give a damn, or are desperate enough to make a sheetload of moneys.

Rockstar has been dropping very low on my "like" scale in the recent years too, what with the GTA4 crapload of bugs, Red Dead Redemption crapload of bugs, other games' crapload of bugs... Pattern anyone? Not to mention their decision to avoid the PC platform because they cannot combat piracy.
So we got stuck with Red Dead Redemption as a laughable console exclusive. Not one person I know ever said they enjoyed playing the game as much as just watching all the glitches and bugs, like a Charlie Chaplin movie.

The game industry is at its lowest, when the developers do not want to or just cannot think up an original concept for a game and just put it out there without being slammed by their publishers, or worse, closed down and have all its employees out of a job they most certainly desperately need in times like these. Everything revolves around money and greed, just like the major part of our societies - hell, the whole humanity itself! - and there are very few left who actually make games for the love of making games! That's why I like Kickstarter, for example, that's the way today's developers prove they still have something to offer, but nobody to offer it to.

Day by day the horizon for us is gloomier, I can't wrap the idea around my head that people let go of their money so easily, the idea that a publisher can spend millions of dollars in advertising instead than spending it on fixing the game or making a good game but, in the end... it boils down on people making stupid decisions because they don't want to take 2 minutes of their busy time to think.

I see it in all the sports now a day... 140 baseball games? really: :o: 14 playoff games + another 7 final games in BkB? what? 4 to 5 hour Football games when the players barely get to play 45 minutes total and all we see is how many flags and talk time can the referees get away with? :(

What EA, Ubi and Activision do is despicable but... what do you call what we do as consumers?

Well to put it bluntly the gaming industry grew big and got hollywoodified. It's easy for companies to cater to the casual "ooh, shiney!" people who are fine with disposable 5-hour games. While many of us still enjoy involving games, it's still profitable enough for publishers to churn out crap and bet on quantity rather than quality.

Meh.

It's still possible to put your money where your mouth is: just buy indie, Steam, used, or import. Haven't paid full price for a game in ages. Sure, I don't get to play on launch day, but that's a meaningless statistic. Unless you have buddies who really want to play with you at the same time, why pay $60 now when you can easily pay $20 in weeks, sometimes even days (lol) later?

ye i usually don't buy game on launch day or for $60 also, anyways right now i'm waiting for steam to put up there summer sale to see if they put some of the more expensive games i been wanting to play on sale.I usually buy games that are $40 and down. Most of the games i own cost me $20,15 and some for 30 and one that cost me 50 but only that one because it was new and i really wanted to play it.

In days when every single buck counts, of course one would carefully consider what to buy, when and where. Those who have enough of a big pocket don't care, and that's what's feeding companies like EA and Activision.

It doesn't help much if they DO occasionally release a good game when there's either tons of useless, yet again, vital DLCs, or the fact that they don't exercise any patience towards the developers, forcing them to shut down instead - again, Pandemic Studios and the wonderful (my personal favorite game of all time) "The Saboteur" pops to mind; true, Pandemic made a mess of having been sponsored by ATI (or whatever deal they had with them to advertise them) but releasing a game that didn't work for ATI's GPUs at all (before the beta patch), but still, EA forced them to close down after only having time to release the beta patch, not even finishing it properly. That is simply unforgivable, despite the developers' mistake. There are no glitch and bug free games, and every game needs updating with patches, but that individual case with Pandemic was just one of the few.

Does anyone still remember Maxis before The Sims became a game-like Facebook for no-lifes and losers (among actual, legit players)? Yeah, the memory is getting kinda foggy after so many years of not being able to develop anything but those creepy marionettes...
