This is the reason why I don't ever want Steam. As if I really want to have to activate my games through friggen Steam just to make sure it's a real key. Oh yeah, lovely. More annoying than anything else. And even then, some games on Steam only allow you to install it once, and what if you gotta format your drive? Oh, that's right, you often have to buy another game, simply because they don't let you reinstall the game onto the same computer, even though it has the same hardware. Yeah, lovely program. Thanks, but no thanks. I'll stick with my games that won't go through that awful program. If the games I get say it needs Steam at the store, I just say "forget it" and put it back on the shelf.

That's got nothing to do with Steam.

You could be in the exact same situation with any game with DRM you buy, and not every game uses Windows installer, what about InstallShield? That's a third party program, and then you then a lot of the time have to use a 3rd party program to activate said game as well.

Steam doesn't activate any game through itself. If a game that you can buy on Steam needs to be activated, then it does it through the exact same activation process you'd use if you bought a physical copy of the game. Such as GTA IV. No game that Valve makes that they release on Steam has DRM at all. You install it, and play it. And can reinstall it as many times as you want.

All your arguements against Steam are all moot points as they have nothing to do with Steam as a whole, more to the developers that choose to release there games through Steam.

You will never convince those of us who hate steam to love it. Its just to much bloatware for most of us to use. Installing a normal pc game goes like this:

1. Install game to games partition meaning you will never have to reinstall it
2. Apply cd key
3. Apply nocd
4. play game with or without the disk with instant start up time

2. Wait for steam to load and then update

steps 1-3 is done one and only time.
steps 4-6 has nothing to do with Steam. it is from CD/DVD land. on Steam you download game with latest patch already.
step 7 is moot.
step 8 is relative. you can load it on windows startup.

EA, Valve is losing you and gaining others.

• Why would you want to slow down your boot up time so that an application can load at startup for games when you might not even play a game?

Steam rarely updates (its not worse than windows update)
HL2 is a valve game, and so requires steam. It is like XBox live for PC
You can't
I have never once not been able to play because of busy servers
It takes very little extra time.

Steam is not exactly how I would want it, but for its purpose it works.

My like of Steam is not a commandment for anyone else to love it. But, it works--and it works well. Some of you look at it as bloatware, but I could not disagree with that assertion more.

Again, every game I own thru Steam is installed, activated, and ready to play on every PC I own. The only thing I cannot do is log on to Steam using my same username/password on more than on PC at the same time. Other than that, if I get tired of playing on my Windows 7 machine, I close Steam, go in the garage, fire up my XP machine and pick up on Steam without missing a beat. How is that bad? With a physical disc, you're locked to the first machine until you uninstall it first.

I'm not naive either to know that sometimes software just does not work the way it's supposed to. I have no answer to some of the reasons others have problems with it. For me, I live less than 25 miles from Los Angeles and Steam has a download server (or servers) in Los Angeles. I never get a busy server message... My downloads or updates are alway in the 1.5 to 3 Mbps download speed. And to repeat myself, every game I own is installed activated and ready for me to play on every PC I own. I see that as a good thing. And, my hard drive space hardly notices a what..? 4 megabyte applications...? Since when is 4 megabytes bloatware?

Anyway, I'd much rather spend my money thru Steam than to have to hope that Best Buy, Gamestop, or Fry's hasn't sold out a new hit title I was hoping to buy and then have to wait for their stock to be replentished.

But it comes down to what Neo said in the Matirix: It's about choice. You can choose to not go with Steam... But the majority of the pc gaming distribution is going the way of applications like Steam.

(Lastly, in what brick-and-mortar mortar store are you going to find something like "The Codemasters Pack": Dirt, Dirt2, Grid, ToCA Race Driver, and Fuel--5 games for $17.50? I like racing games and considered buying Grid when it was out. But everywhere it was sold for $49.99. Dirt2 is fairly recent... 5 games for $17.50...! ! ! Deals like that abound on Steam. Heck, even freebees too. But that's for me to enjoy cause it's bloatware to you )

As iv said before if you like it then use but i don't so i wont Oh and its bloatware just for how long it takes to load a game. I cracked HL2 and got it to run without steam being installed and the difference between load times of the game and the levels was amazing.

Anyway to get back on topic even if EA charged $10 or whatever to allow someone to use a second hand game which i think is outrageous, it would still be better than steam which doesn't allow you to sell your games at all.

that's exactly why i love Steam. man... Mass Effect for 7.49, GTA IV for 7.49 and three Hitman games for 9.99eur... i live from weekend/holiday deals

throw your disk out because it's obsolete and now you have the game on Steam. you can download it anywhere, anytime and play when you want.

Nope. I had a friend of mine let me borrow his Half-Life 2 game, and guess what? It wanted me to activate it's Cd-Key through Steam. So you're incorrect in this statement. This is why I create .iso files or crack them when I own the original so I don't have to deal with bullsh!t like this.

I was talking about buying Valve games actually on Steam, not with a disk. The disks are used for linking them to a single Steam account. Once that's done, then you can install them as many times as you like from that Steam account.

Well I'm not talking about games bought from Steam, my whole point was physical game disks bought from the store throughout the whole thread. I first thought the original poster was talking about PC games, but it turns out he was talking about console games.
