sorry to ask such a basic question but I cant find the google answer

my cpu load keeps going above 50% even as high as 78%

Could you be a bit more specific? 50-78% spikes or it staying at that useage?

What kind of CPU do you have and how much RAM?

If your seeing the occasional 50% spike soon after boot or while doing normal activities, with a dual core for example:

I wouldnt think is out of the ordinary.

Depending how much RAM you currently have, more can help with the overall feel and responsiveness of the system.

IMHO, 2GB is the bare min. for any Win 7 machine.
And 4GB would be the sweet spot.

IF you were burning that CPU on behalf of PAGING, then more memory would help. But, since paging is so I/O-intensive, it's likely it couldn't bury the CPU with that much usage (50%).

Memory is likely not your issue.

Considering the lack of details, if your cpu is constantly running at 50% to 70%, download Malwarebytes and kill that spy ware...

Open task manager, processes tab, sort by CPU, see whats using it. That will tell you where to start.
