Easy Transfer

I did an easy transfer from an win 7 laptop to a win 7 desktop today. Everything seemed to transfer perfectly with the exception of my email accounts and email. I am using the office 10 beta. does anyone have any ideas as to how to make the transfer work? Otherwise I have to go back and setup all the accounts and the rules along with importing/exporting the data.

I can tell you how it works with Windows Live Mail. Could be the same with Office 10. Bring up the email client (with windows live) on the left side, you will see, sent mail ,inbox etc. Toward the bottom of those capations, there is archives. With Windows live mail, all transferred mail will be there.

What is that in Office. Maybe a .pst file holds all the settings. Can you find one of those to restore.

If you can't you should be able to export one from the laptop to use.

I haven't used the Windows Easy Transfer with the retail 7 quite yet despite a second 64bit installation lately with the the Office 2010 beta on. But if you had previously made a backup with Outlook you can certainly import your previous files, settings, and even RSS Feeds with the import option seen under "File".

When the Easy Transfer was looked at here that was with the previous RC installations without Office 2010 there but still works in the same manner with the retail 7.

If I use Import/Export how do I keep the formating of the emails? Everytime I do the import it puts all the emails in one folder with no dates or the attachments.

Unfortunately for that you would need to start all over and simply watch the emails download from the mail server all over again once you add each email account in. Where it shows Account Information in the File tab on the left the option to add new account is a small link right below the title there.

When first going to set up Office between the two 64bit 7 install one just seen on a new drive and the 32bit 7 I started fresh with each one rather then importing a backup for this reason. The import option is simply a convenience to save time setting each account up individually but not practical for preserving things.

Don't worry the same thing was seen with previous versions of Windows with Outlook Express and Window Mail where any new Windows installation saw those set up fresh all over again for the same problem! It's a pain but these are the two options. Convenience or a little extra time.
