Recently I occasionally get a window on my desktop named EasyUpdater. It is after I initially turn my computer on. My other computer has Vista O/S on it and I do not get this window. I have tried a search for this file but come up empty. I have checked the program files and the control panel for indications but have found nothing. Can anyone help me delete this file?

It was probably installed as part of some software that you installed.

The next time you get the window, leave it open, then right click on the TaskBar and select TaskManager. Click on the Process tab and see if anything in there gives you a clue.

Rich, sorry it hs taken so long to answer. I looked in the task mgr when the window came up. I found the process and it was labeled mxtask background user service and a second one without the word user. I closed the one that said user service and the window closed. Will that stop the window from appearing?

Paul, that will not stop the window from appearing. All you did was close the current instance of that program. To get rid of it permanently you need to stop it from running at all, either by using msconfig to disable the Startup or Service task or uninstall the program that mstask.exe is part of.

rvbfan gave a link to a site that has a good explanation of the file and where it may have come from.

I installed a program recently and it had a "throw-in" program from avanquest. Maybe I should try removing it You are right bout the window coming back. I read the article rvbfan told me about and I think I have one of those programs installed. I use their PowerDesk Manager but it has been on my computer for several years.

I use PowerDesk from Avanquest, not the PowerDesk Manager. It has a lot of DLLs that start with mx but no mxtask.exe.

I can think of a couple ways to disable just mxtask.exe.

Click Start, enter gpedit.msc and press Enter.
Navigate through User Configuration > Administrative Templates and click on System.
Double click Don't run specified Windows applications.
Enable it and click Show.
Add mxtask.exe and click OK.
Open My Computer and navigate to the PowerDesk Manager program folder.
Right click mxtask.exe and select Properties.
Under the Security tab, select SYSTEM and click Edit.
Check Read & Execute in the Deny column, and click OK.

Either of these should preventmxtask.exe from starting. Using gpedit is probably the better option.

Rich, I misspoke, I have powerdesk also. But I looked in the program files and checked Avanquest folder. The two programs are PowerDesk and Fix-it. I opened up both files and found the mxtask.exe file in the Fix-it folder. PowerDesk is clean. Should I delete the whole program?
I appreciate all your help and also the others who have answered. We seniors are a little bit slower catching on the new tech stuff that keeps popping up. Thanx.

Do you use any of the tools in Avanquest Fix-It? If not, uninstall it.

I checked their web site and it looks like it costs $49.95 so if you paid for it and want to continue to use it, you can use msconfig to see if you can find the specific task that launches EasyUpdater and disable it there, or use either of the methods I posted previously.

This is a good tutorial on How to use msconfig in Windows 7

Just want to add if you don't see anything in the Startup tab, click on the Services tab, then check the Hide all Microsoft services box and look there.

Rich, I deleted the program and it solved the problem. I never used it anyway. It was a throw in with something else I purchased. Thanx for all the help.
