Hi all,

I'm helping someone out with a problem. They seemed to have lost their security tab in Explorer Properties when they right click on their Storage Drive... i.e. E:/.

I have tried going through the local group policy editor... gpedit.msc and setting the "Remove Security Tab" to disabled and/or Not Configured. This does not bring it back.

I think editing the registry may be best and easiest. I found this article on the Vista Forums HERE however when I view the manual way's key for editing the registry via regedit in Windows 7 it is not the same path. Does anyone know if there is a .reg file to download to get this done? Or know the path in the registry and which key to edit? Will the above link's instructions work, if the path is not the same I wouldn't think so.

Thanks, I would appreciate your help. :D

Goldenboy,

I double checked everything, and it's the exact same in Windows 7 as it was in Vista in that tutorial. If you cannot get it restored, then you might search the registry with Find and Find Next for NoSecurityTab, and delete any entry with NoSecurityTab.

Remove Security tab:
Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"NoSecurityTab"=dword:00000001

Restore Security tab:
Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"NoSecurityTab"=-

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"NoSecurityTab"=-

Thank you, I will pass along the instructions and I will surely keep you updated on how things go.

Question though, In my windows 7 the below path in the registry doesn't fully exist. It stops at Policies... There is no Explorer, it won't expand any further.
Why is that?
Code:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\[B][COLOR=Red]Explorer]
"NoSecurityTab"=dword:00000001
[/COLOR][/B]

No problem. You can right click on the Policies key, then click on New and Key. Next, type Exporer and press enter to add the Explorer key if wanted.

You can use the REG file downloads in the tutorial or the post above to add or remove this in the registry automatically though. :)

Ahhhh, so confirming whether an edit works in 7 the same as Vista doesn't necessarily have anything to do if the key already exists or not, huh? That is why I posted here because the Explorer key wasn't there, and I thought I'd better check before I continued.

Most are the same in Vista and Windows 7, but sometimes you have to manually add them. I usually add the REG files to make it easier for everyone so that they do not have to do it manually unless they wanted to.

For this issue, the main entry to look at is the NoSecurityTab DWORD. The locations above is the default location for this if the "Security" tab has been disabled, but it could have been manually placed (ex: by malware) in another location to still disable it.

I see, thank you... I figured 7 and Vista usually are the same, but working with the registry you never can be to careful. He'll be using ERUNT to back it up first. :) I'll let you know.

I cannot make the security tab to appear no matter what I try. I have tried the gpedit.msc option and the registry option to no avail :(
