I have 1x 120GB SSD which I use to host my operating system and relocated User folders during Windows 7 installation to partition D. I keep all my personal files on an internal 2TB storage drive and have another 2TB storage drive to use for backup of my personal files. I haven't figured out an effective way to backup and I also have a 4TB NAS which is in Raid 1 (2x2TB).

C:/ System Files D:/ Documents and Settings < [120GB SSD]

E:/ Personal Files F:/ Backup < [2x 2TB HDD]

Z:/ NAS in Raid 1 < [2x 2TB HDD]

I only have 750GB of data I need to protect and with disk image 1.5TB. Do I need a synchronization tool so it mirrors the contents between my Personal Files & My Backup HDD ?

It wouldn't hurt. Try this to see if it works for you:

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/278866-synctoy-backup-user-data.html

Hi,

I keep experiencing issues with Synctoys. I use the echo option between E:/ & F:/ and 75% through the scan hangs and needs to be closed .. is it because the content of the two drives are different ? Do I need to manually duplicate the drive content then pair ?

Thanks

Some files are quiet large but I downloaded and started using Goodsync now which appears to work fine. Just need to grow accustom to it and think I will use automated chained synchronization across the drives with certain exclusions.

Thanks for your help

Hey,

Do you know if Microsoft's Sync Toys detects and synchronizes changes to a file or folders attributes such as changing it to ReadOnly or Hidden ?

GoodSync doesn't seem capable of that as I tried emailing them and they say Changing file attribute doesn't change file modification time. It's not essential but I have files that I make hidden and it's not detected or sync'd across other hard drives :(

From GoodSync FAQ:
Q: So how GoodSync decides whether file has changed and it must be synced?
A: If either file modification time or its size has changed then GoodSync assumes that file has changed.
GoodSync propagates the changes that it so found from the folder where they were found to the folder on the other side of the job.

I'm not sure whether changing attributes registers as a file modification, but the default behaviour of SyncToy is to synchronise read-only and hidden files, unless you specify otherwise.
