My external HD will not eject. In Vista it ejects fine. I west to customize the tray icons and saw this. The eject button listed as "Windows Host Process" What is up with this and is this why it will not eject? I have never seen this before and wonder if it's correct or a bug. I went back a few minutes later and it was showing the icon as normal but still will not eject properly.

Thanks for the reply. I'm not the only one. All my other drives eject fine too. It is not being defragged (as far as I can tell) or indexed so I don't know what to think. It is set in device manager to eject without using the button so......I guess I'll just pull it out. I know I'm not the only one to do this. haha

Shows the same for me. You could try logging off and logging back on, that might let the drive go.

FWIW - I have a 4 GB UFD (SanDisk Cruzer Mini) that I keep a lot of documents on from school, plus a whole slew of Portable Apps - if I ever run the Portable Apps menu followed by my KeePass Password Safe program, I can never get Win7 to release the devie - it tells me the device is in use even when it is not anymore....

I just wait for the light to stop blinking ( indicating all write activity has completed) and then yank it out.

Try using USB Safely Remove and if you want to purchase it you can get it for $12 USD (40% off) by going to USB Safely Remove Software at 40% Discount - Superior Device Management!

OR, if you want a free gadget (I've not tested it on windows 7) you can try:

They don;t help - once I have run KeePass the drive acts like it is still in use even with all portable apps shut down and all Explorer windows closed.

No sense in paying for an app that does what I already do....

I found a cheaper way to go about it.I uninstalled the U3 garbage and got rid of the partition it was on.Now it acts like an actual flash drive should and haven't had a problem removing it yet.Maybe Win 7 just didn't like it for some reason?

I did too - hence I said *portable apps* not U3.

What's weird is I have 4 USB flash drives like everyone is talking about. They all work like they are supposed to. The one I am having problems with is a 250 GB Seagate external hard drive. I hate to mess with it too much....it has all my back-up stuff on it.

I hate to use a third party app when Windows should do what I need.

One of my 4 GB UFD works like it is supposed to - but that one is the one that I have my Win7 install files on.

The one with the PortableApps menu system is the one that goes stupid, particularly when I run KeePass Password Safe. I think ti is b/c of the way that KeePass creates a system-wide key to allow for automate user name and PW entry - since that is linked to the program, even when the program exits it is still somehow in Windows 7 leaving a trace of itself somewhere, and thus the UFD fails to eject.

Of course, I have never tried running the app in Vista compatibility, and that might solve my problems....

Hmmm....

My solution is clearly a bad one, but you could just unplug it. It shouldn't be a problem for Hi-Speed USB 2.0

I call it the craptop.
Sigh. I already *do* that - the point is that Windows is not *releasing* the device even when it is not in use at all. That is a problem. A bug, but only if I can verify it is not actually b/c of the software that I run from it....

So do any of you "more experienced" people know why the "safely remove hardware" icon would be showing "Windows host process"? Is it supposed to be doing this?

I had windows 7 build 7077 and had this same problem.i formatted because the problem was beginning to annoy me.
the funny thing is that with fat32 pen drive the problem doesn't occur.
i will install again to see if the icon nate42nd shows in the image occur to me as well.
