um,
why should I go through the icon dismount
instead of just pulling the media when file transfer is done?

I've done it with SSD's directly many times with no problems.
perhaps platter drives need time to park?

That's to tell windows you want to remove the device, in case it's got anything still cached or an installer or something is still running. Sure, you can just yank it out... most of the time you don't lose anything. But why take the chance?
