Dear Folks,
My image shows part of an email found in my AOL spam folder. The message is from EDF whom I'm in the process of switching to from Scottish Power. As far as I know, EDF only have my gmail address.
-
In my image, the text in blue is a clickable link. AOL block all links & I never use any link in an email.
-
My question to you is:- how do I check it?

Go on EDF site, and see if there is a link to the voucher, if not its a scam. Forward on to the phishing email address EDF should have so they can investigate.
I have not received an Email off my provider as regards the discount.

Hi:

EDIT: It looks like @kingscurate and I were typing at the same time. Great minds think alike!:)

That sure looks like a spoof.

You are wise NOT to click the link.

First: you may wish to directly contact EDF via phone or via their web site to inquire about the validity of the offer and to report the spam/spoof email.

For the link, you may submit it to virustotal or a similar service.
Regardless of the result there, though, I would NOT click that link.

HTH,

MM

I usually try hovering the cursor over things like that to see what the actual link is, it should show at the bottom.

Here's what I see hovering over your specs link,

Hi derekimo,
This wont work for me as AOL have blocked the link.
EDF have already told me to treat it as spam.

If the link is blocked then there is nothing to worry about. Surely?

Hi, @Roderunner:

If hovering doesn't work (as suggested by @derekimo), perhaps you can still RIGHT-click the link to bring up the context menu and then select "copy link location".
You can then paste the URL into notepad or into code tags or into the search field at virustotal.com

Having said all that, if you have to ask how to safely view/manipulate the link without inadvertently clicking it, then I agree with @Golden: just leave it be, especially if you already know that it is a spoof/spam and if AOL is trying to protect you by blocking it.

If it's serving up something nasty, inadvertently left-clicking it without sufficient protection (sandbox, anti-exploit protection, anti-malware protection, etc.) could get you infected.

The safest course of action would be leave it be.

Cheers,

MM

If im weary of a message, i usually right click the title and select View message source, brings up the email outside of the OS.
A scotsman running AOL, been around a while then.

You don't say how you access gmail.

If though your browser:

Sign into gmail and open this link in a new tab:

https://mail.google.com/mail/?ui=html&zy=h

That should open your gmail account in HTML view.

Open your suspicious email and click show original

Email Link.jpg

You can read the link behind the text.

Email Link 2.jpg

If you are using an email client then it would be hard to give instructions without knowing which email client you use.

If you are using Outlook Express, Windows Live Mail or Mozilla Thunderbird then you could view your gmail databases using

Mitec Mail Viewer

Open database:

MiTeC Mail Viewer open database.jpg

Select email and open it.

MiTeC Mail Viewer.jpg

Check Source.

I think the two points I highlighted above would be useful.

Seems to me it's a safe bet it's bogus if you never gave them your AOL email.

Does moving it out of the spam folder let you see the link by hovering?

If not, it sounds like this setting is enabled,
