I asked the same question myself not too long ago. There's always Google's
Gmail Notifier but it has an annoying bug: it won't save your login/password so you have to reenter it at every system boot.
Meanwhile I've discovered
POP Peeper and absolutely love it.

If you decide to install it, be sure to select the IMAP plugin. You don't need any other plugins (especially not the webmail one, it's not for Gmail).
