BlueHornet seems to be a legitimate e-marketing organisation - and their website also shows the DigitalRiver logo - It may be legit but I would personally still not click on anything I was not expecting

It's ok, no need for extra research, the digital river company has done fraudulent charges on people, googled it, so I just won't click anything.

edit: just checked on my windows 7 student download email it came from <[email protected]> so this might not be a scam... Any more opinions?

MS is not a client of bluehornet at least I would think they would have them on the client list.

seems a little odd for a personal email address for marketing also.

My original student windows 7 discount email came from ([email protected]) with a link to digital river That is where I bought and downloaded windows 7, maybe this isn't a scam?

the email coming from a personal looking address struck me as very odd, second the bluehornet client page doesn't list MS and I would have them at the top of my client list if I had them as a client. This looks to me like a address farming email. basically just trying to find valid addresses to use later for other reason or to sell to marketers.

That shows it's a scam right there. There is no "Office for Seven". It's Office 2010 and it's not exclusive to seven.

How was I added?

I'm not recommending you register for the mailing list because I don't know what information it'll provide, but it is not a scam. Bluehornet is a subsidiary of Digital River, as stated here

and Digital River is where you bought your Win 7, if I am understanding this correctly.

I received the same email and googled it and found that information along with this thread, and thought I'd share what I found.

This email just landed in my Spam folder too. It doesn't look very professional at all. "Dear ," is the first tip off.

It sounds like DR is using email address provided by people who purchased the student download. Their intention who knows . I just know I would delete it without hesitation.Which I do with every unsolicited email I receive. Fabe

Bin it with out opening any more and forget it.

(In fact why did you even OPEN it in the first place - should have gone straight to the delete folder)

Now I can understand how easily malware can get distributed - although in this case it *might* be OK.

Don't EVER respond to those type of emails --they will bombard you with "other unmissable offers" etc -- later on. Just DELETE them without even opening them.

You won't miss out on ignoring them and you'll probably save some money and certainly grief too.

The consensus would appear to be that you ignore and bin this email. I would agree with that. It is no different to people that you see in the street asking for opinions on one product or another in the interests of marketing and market research. I just ignore them, as once you get onto one of their lists you will inevitibly be bombarded with junk mail and leaflets for products you are not interested in. It will also be very difficult, and in some cases virtually impossible, to get your name removed from the mailing list(s). The same will happen here, only instead of it coming through your letterbox it will come through your email.

BlueHornet a scam?

I don't know if BlueHornet is a scam or not; all I know is that for 10 weeks I've been emailing a BlueHornet tech support email address and asking why I haven't received my "purchased authorization".
I don't have an "edu" email address so instead you're supposed to go through this other process of sending them copy of student verification. I've sent them copies of my student i.d. and class enrollment schedule, and I've done this TWICE !!!

still no help from them, except to send me emails saying I have to contact Microsoft sales, and also that I have to contact Digital River and ask where my product is.

This is just so ridiculous, it seems Microsoft just wanted a public relations stunt by offering this Student Windows 7 Offer. They never meant to actually make it possible to GET this offer.

So what experiences have y'all had out there?
