Email settings not recognized when using web page email link

I've been running XP for some years and recently set up Win 7 on a new SSD. In XP and using Opera browser, if I clicked on an web page's email link, my email client (Sylpheed) would open with the address inserted. With Win 7 and the email defaults set, it won't. Instead, it always returns an "Internal communication error" page (example link: Contact Us | PCWorld). Any ideas what else to try? Thanks,

Below are screenshots of my Win 7 email defaults and Opera preferences setting. One thing I'm not sure about, if it's at all relevant, is where Opera is picking up the default application from. In XP, it picked up Opera email as the default. The Other Application file location shown is exactly the same in both, except for the drive letter.

In the middle picture of your post it shows the normal way the window opens with "use my current...". Now select your choice "Opera Next" for browser and email, "ok" out. That should fix it, hopefully.

That doesn't fix the problem and, in any case, neither of them hold. Open that Win 7 default screen again and they are back to what shows in the screenshot. Works the same way in XP. Beyond that, not sure why I'd want to change my email default to Opera Next (and there's a reason, for another time, why I hesitate to make Opera my default browser).

The screen shot is normal for when you first open the window. Sorry, I meant you next need to select whatever default programs you want. (Just assumed it was Opera since you went to the trouble of installing it.) If "Sylpheed" doesn't show up in the list, you may have to use the "Associate a file type..." window to associate Protocols (at the bottom of the window), including "MAILTO", with the program(s) you want for each Protocol.

The "Set Your Defaults" screenshot earlier in this thread says defaults are set for Sylpheed (bottom middle) and that's confirmed by settings showing in the following screen . So why don't email links find it? Got me.

Win 7 is on I, yes. The strange thing is that in EasyBCD, XP also shows as I: drive, tho as you can see below it's C drive.

Maybe that's the source of the "internal communication error".

No, that just developed yesterday after I played around with drive lettering in EasyBCD. I installed the SSD and Win 7 two weekends ago and noticed the email problem about a week ago, when I first had one to open. Puzzling.

Perhaps there's something in this. Wild guess, but I wonder if by design or by bug Win 7 can't deal with email settings when they're referring to anything other than C drive.
