Emoticons not working

all of a sudden my emoticons are not showing up in my emails.
just an X and a description of the emoticon that i chose. how do i fix this??:(

Umm... would this happen to be for Windows Mail?

Tools -> Options -> Security tab -? uncheck
the 'Do not allow attachments..." and uncheck the "Block images..." buttons.
