Solved Empty folder icons changed

I booted up my computer this morning, and it appears as if, unbidden, my folder icon changed to something more... flat. See my attached screenshot to see what I mean.

I can't seem to figure out by what logic this change was made, and an hour of searching through Google came up fruitless.

I tried changing the icons manually (via properties > customize > change icon) but to no avail; they remained flat.

Any help is appreciated.

Weird things happen like this as well (see attachments). If I select the folder in Explorer, it shows the correct icon, and then I deselect it, and it goes back to the strange icon.
