when you delete an item how are you doing it, do you right click then select delete?
or are you using a key shortcut.
the key shortcut deletes without putting the item in the bin. also your bin size may have something to do with it, as if the items are too large they will be deleted without being stored in the bin, although you generally see a pop up regarding that.
may be worth checking the size of the bin

Are you deleting files from a removable drive?
They tend to bypass the recycling bin, in my experience.
