Solved Enabling UEFI

I didn't know quite where to put this query but.... I have an Intel DG43NB board which the BIOS settings have an option to enable UEFI. Now I have tried enabling it but am not getting anything happen just a black screen which a white cursor travels down until the machine boots.

So does one have to install some sort of software - have had a Google but cannot find any definitive answers so anyone give me a hint please?

There are two ways to install Windows when using that motherboard, or any motherboard that supports UEFI.

1. Install Windows normally, just like you always have.
2. Install Windows 7 x64 under UEFI.

In order to install it, you enable UEFI in your BIOS, and you boot your Windows 7 x64 DVD in UEFI mode. Check out the guide:

Bios Settings

This has to be set in the bios for a UEFI boot.

There can be a few more steps needed depending on your configuration... Are you able to boot into the UEFI shell? Do you have a second drive handy that's over 4GB in capacity?

Well to answer all I had the BIOS set to UEFI and ACHI before install although I suppose the original install was 32bit and wasn't installed under those two settings. Though I really can't see how that would affect this 64bit OS install to be honest.

I will have a look at those Intel refs though and see what can be done using something from them.

If nothing happens then I reckon I shall just do a secure erase or clean all using one of my other machine as the original OS is sitting in the drive under Windows.old somewhere I think it is lumped in with the second install perhaps that is the problem.

There is a type of UEFI that was originally shipped, mainly with Intel boards that are of 'type 0' as opposed to 'type 1' UEFI.
The differences are visible, or not as the first type has no native interface and can therefore not be seen or changed, this was primarily used so that both methods of loading the bootstrap were supported.

I'm not entirely sure if this information is usable but it may explain in part why there is a blank screen.

What are you trying to use UEFI for? Have you enabled it, then booted up your Windows 7 x64 disc in EFI mode and installed Windows under EFI?

Well Keg I was curious to be honest and this is my test machine that I found a BIOS entry for enable / disable UEFI and reading that it is the future so to speak.

Thought I'd give it a try but enabling didn't do anything so I have secure erased and reinstalled 7 again under ACHI which was enabled anyway and well am waiting on some advice re setting this up as I said I am just curious as to what you can do with it as opposed to the Intel BIOS which I have now and I find rather complicated and lengthy to figure out as I don't have much or very little knowledge of what a lot of the settings actually mean apart from TRO like boot order etc.

So you see I am a bit green with these things and thought well best left alone now it is booting much faster now than before until I get a really concept of the feature.

But if you have any advice that would help me out I would be most appreciative as the Intel site is as you know a morass of info that takes a Phd to wade through.

I am in the same boat. My Asus P8Z77-V Deluxe loaded up so smooth I didn't learn a thing. Asus has software that goes with the board that has a lot of features. One being overclock. It set my CPU to 4.12 GHZ and runs memory at 1850 GHZ. So I haven't learned very much. But that hasn't stopped me from tweaking it at lesiurely pace. I agree about intels info it is there you just need to dig it out and comprehend it. (CPU I7 3770K)

The greatest commonality is that they offer the choice to make an EFI install normally by setting an EFI boot disk first to boot in BIOS setup, requiring a GPT formatted disk. The only benefit I see is unlimited Primary partitions. But we do fine with MBR HD's by using Logicals.

So I would stick with MBR disks to avoid problems which become even more complex during repairs. We will need to relearn a lot.

Yes HH I agree 100% I did find refs to software in the Intel site and am busy trying to find it again strange thing is as I was telling a friend just now the Giga H67 I have in the main has no ref to UEFI at all yet this old 2008 board has

Still my next build I am not skimping on and ma going to try out an Asus board next (ASUS P8Z77-V PRO with an i5 Ivy Bridge) as my boards have all been Gigas in the past and the support is extremely tedious to get. Plus the Asus is going to have this feature not quite obscure eh?

Sorry Greg was busy typing the last post - yes mate from what I have read and do know about it it does seem to be in the lap of the Gods so to speak and I guess until there is a uniform agreement to it's format for want of a better term it's going to be a steep learning curve.

Asus Boards

I have used Asus board for so long I don't know anything else. In the past the utilities they supplied with their boards were kind of "hit and miss". But this suite is pretty sweet (how is that for a pun?). If I can set one up a monkey can handle it.

I am not following you. My disks are formated NTFS. I installed with the UEFI bios booted.

Hum Greg you had me floundering there too I just looked up GPT drives and sorry mate but I am tad lost here myself I thought a drive was a drive and now there seems to be some dual thing going on so do you mean you need to set up a drive as one normally does - Straight install ?MBR or get a particular piece of hardware that takes the GPT?
