then why when i boot up a windows 7 install dvd, running at 800x600 does the boot animation work?

Just booted my netbook from a bootable USB with the install dvd on it. I only get the green bar at bootup. The animation runs from BIOS and CPU before the OS and video drivers are even loaded which makes your observation a head scratcher for sure. Sadly the average person seems far more interested in boot speed than how pretty the loading screen is.

Okay, but the computer that has the striped progress bar is set at 1080x1024. It is possible that when I first installed the OS that the resolution was lower until I reset it, but shouldn't have resetting the resolution have changed the animation also?

No. The animated boot runs from BIOS and CPU before the OS is even loaded. It makes no difference where you set your resolution after the OS is booted. As an experiment I changed the resolution on my laptop from 1200x800 down to 800x600 and rebooted. The animated boot was still there. The ability to show the animation or not is determined by the BIOS and CPU, not your video card.

What you have said would make sense to me, if it were possible to set or reset the resolution within the BIOS but, at least on my hardware it is not. I still fail to understand how the resolution is the factor, since the OSs were installed in identical fashions on both computers, and until the Nvidia driver was installed, graphics was driven by the Windows native driver, which choses it's own resolution.
