English keyboard gone - can't type password

you normally get two discs 32/64 bit use the disc for your system that you installed with i take it is 64 bit looking at your specs

I only have one disc and that's the one I'm using. As I said, the choice between 32 and 64 is done just before installing.

Yes, I can, but I hate to think of all the software I'm gonna have to reinstall and reconfigure. I'll do that as a last resort.
As soon as the weekend is over, I'll call the store where I bought my computer. They do tons of installations; perhaps they'll find a way out of this mess.

yes they may be able to help to save you losing data the other way is to use a live cd distro of linux like ubuntu you boot into the live disc(linux operating system) and you could copy your files and download to a external drive then after what you have salvaged reinstall a fresh windows 7 have you a friend with a pc to help you

Hiya Roninbar, you could try using this free utility Trinity Rescue Kit | CPR for your computer to remove (blank) the password and enable you to log on normally, whilst this is not a tool I recommend to circumvent bypassing the login option there are genuine cases like what you are experiencing where tools like this could bring back a sense of normality.

*please note this is NOT intended to bypass windows security and should NOT be used for these purposes. I'm sure that Seven forums will remove this link if they see fit.

Brian, I don't think it's necessary to go into all this trouble to copy the files to an external drive. The installation doesn't format the disk; it just renames Windows to Windows.old. The real killer is having to re-install all the programs I have now, digging up the license keys for everything, re-configuring the system...

I managed to get in by typing the password in ASCII using the left ALT key and the numeric keypad.
I still have no idea what caused the English keyboard to become unavailable at the log-in screen, or how to get it back. It's still available from within the user session, as if it never went away.

Got it. I had to copy the language settings from my user account to the welcome screen.

WELL DONE !!!! bet you are pleased now make a rescue disk using windows and keep it safe!!


To create a recovery disk in Windows 7 go through the following steps:

1. Click Start Orb and go to Control Panel
   
2. select Back up your computer under the System and Security option.
   
   
3. From the left sidebar, select Create a system repair disk.
   
   
4. Finally select your CD-R/RW or DVD-R/RW drive from the new dialog window and hit Create Disc.

It will start creating a disc instantly. Once complete, hit OK, label it, and save the disk in a safe location.


The total file size of the recovery disk is 164MB which means you can burn it to a CD instead of DVD.




Note that if you are using Windows 7 64-bit then the recovery disk must be made from same version of OS, using a recovery disk from 32-bit is not recommended and vice versa.
