Hi Jtoolman

I was thinking of trying that, thanx. I wonder if a Vista driver would work for my HP 7660, worth a try I guess.

Open device manager, and select your printer. Then right click and Update Drviers, and let it search the internet.

Never mind I found it under ports, listed as a ECP printer (LPT1) It says the divers are up to date. But it still wont print, no errors showing either.

Hi Gang

Just so we are on the same page and trying to find out why it wont print, the printer is connected to my main computer, I have this Win 7Rc installed to a secondary computer. I checked with my main computer to make sure it is ok with sharing, and that seems ok, and the computer is turned on. Every thing looks ok on the sec computer the Epson is set as the default printer, and I assume the drivers are installed ok. I get no errors, it just wont print.

Thanx...Gunny

Gunny. Have you navigated to control panel then devices and printers and then at the top of that page click on add a printer?
so yes you do see your printer there( just read your post that say you see it in control panel.) Right click on icon and go to properties. Have you uninstalled the driver and then restarted to see if windows would pic up the correct driver?

Lordbob... The host computer is running XP home.

Myzr7--In Win 7RC when you right click on the printer, there is no item, printer drivers like in XP. Under control panel and you click on printers, and it shows the Epson there. When you click on printers and services it shows that the Epson needs troubleshooting, and has an error.

Thanx...Gunny

Gunny, when you add the printer, try this:

Go to control panel, printers. Add new printer.
Make sure that sharing is enabled on your XP (host) computer and check the name of the computer and the name of the printer and make note of them.
Select add printer, from network.
Skip the search and type in the filepath manually.
Under printer name type //HostComputerName/PrinterName but use your names in place of those.
It should add it and print a test.

Hi Guny3053
Are you SHARING the printer. Which computer is it attached to and which computer do you want to Print on

I made a previous post about sharing printers -- you need to do a little bit of "Poodle fakery" to make it all work especially if you have a mix of x-86 (such as windows XP) and x-64 machines.

Note it's got a USB connection (at least mine has) so you can't use LPT as it's port.

Follow these instructions

I've posted on this before but to share Printers attached to XP computers with either X-64 or X-32 versions of W7 is SIMPLE. These instructions are for the Printer attached to the XP machine (but works in reverse as well).

("Stand alone" Network printers can be done slightly similarly BTW).

assume the computers are call XPMACHINE and W7MACHINE.

1) Ensure Printer on XP machine is shared - assume it's called SHAREDPRINTER.

2) On the Network Browsing on your W7 machine ensure you can "See" the Printer share.

Now on the W7 machine do the following (doesn't matter if it's X-86 or x-64).

3) Control Panel==> add LOCAL (Yes LOCAL) printer. I know it's on a Network but hold your horses -- what we are actually doing is "Poodlefaking" the W7 machine into thinking it's running the printer.

4) Create NEW port==>Local port

5) Portname is \\XPMACHINE\SHAREDPRINTER

6) Now W7 will load a driver and you'll be able to print on the XP machine.

Simple

(For a "Network stand alone printer") at 4) chose TCPIP port
and at 5) enter the IP address.

If the printer is on the W7 machine and you want to print on the XP machine then do the same instructions on the XP machine --
port name in this case will be \\W7MACHINE\SHAREDPRINTER

( this method will also work for printers shared on W7 - W7 etc etc).

Cheers
jimbo

Hi Jimbo---- Thanx for all the info. I guess you would call this a stand alone printer, and the network would just be my main computer, (XP) and my secondary computer (Win 7RC). I don't share the printer with any other computer. When you start talking about ports this has always been a black area you might say, I guess I never have done much or grasped onto what exactly these so called ports do or how they work. I have a very basic understanding, and naturally have heard of them. My understanding is I thought the ports were automatically assigned, and there was no dictating what port you could use. So excuse my ignorance here. Every thing is in the 32, no 64.

I don't do that much printing but it sure would be handy to print from both computers. Just something that I just thought of is the Vista driver you have to have on the Epson, this should be installed on which computer, I assume it to be the computer that my XP is on. I want to get full use of the new Win 7RC, and printing is just one more thing I will be doing.

Thanx....Gunny

Hi me again--- One other thing, you don't mention any thing about installing the drivers on the Win 7RC computer, so I am assuming you don't have to. But this brings up another question if not then what about the incompatibility issues, the Win 7R compuers has.? Does installing the Vista update on the XP computer resolve the incompatibility issue on the Win 7RC computer. I know some of my questions are probably very dumb to people like yourself that have a very good understanding how these computers work. I though I did until things like this come up. :D

Thanx....Gunny
