Solved Erratic answering machine

Anybody know why an answering machine sometimes (often) just misses calls. Our answering message doesn't play at those times, and the phone apparently just hangs itself up. What can I do to fix this (hopefully short of buying a new machine)?

Skinnyguy again. Format's a little confusing for me, but I just wanted to say I fixed the blankety thing (at least for the time being). I ain't holding my breath.
