uninstall the xe3watch program and yes, I am familiar with the program.

Post the output you see from running the wmic line and I'll walk you thru putting that info into your specs.

Okay, all scheduled tasks are disabled and computer is rebooted.

Not sure what some of these are, particularly the Microsoft ones with the names that are just a string of numbers and letters, like "{27297381-C639-4B45-BC31-83B10DD2FAAA}". Also not sure what the specific function of the CCleaner task is. The other three make sense (Adobe Updater and Google Update, though on the Google one I'm not sure why there are two of them).

go to an elevate command prompt, execute the command line I give and post the results back in your next post.

Incidentally, if you did not edit,then you have a very corrupt system and the only solution is a 100% clean install of Win 7.

Alright, here goes what's probably a dumb question:

I forgot that my original hard drive I installed is partitioned into two drives: C contains the OS and program files, and D contains documents, files, etc. I also have an additional drive, K, that I installed purely for storage. I've backed up the User folder to the K drive, but don't have space to backup the entire contents of the D drive without going to an external drive (which I do have, so it's not out of the question).

My dumb question is, will the reinstall erase my D partition, or can I just wipe the C partition and redo that part? Or maybe a better question is, if that's possible, would it still fix the problem or do I need to do the full process of completely wiping the drive and repartitioning on install?

Hope that makes sense. I have a couple of external drives that I can use to backup D if necessary, but it would take quite a long time and I'd like to avoid that step if possible.

Clean installation is complete! A couple notes for full disclosure: when it asked me about partitions, I decided to format the C: partition for the reinstall, but I left my storage partition intact. My reasoning was that whatever was corrupt about the OS wouldn't have been on the storage disk. Most of what's on that partition are raw media files, mostly photo and video, as well as project files. I've got MSE running a full scan on just that partition right now to be on the safe side.

I did, however, create a full back-up of that partition before doing the reinstall, in case it seems to still be corrupt. If that's the case, I can do the install again, but format the entire hard drive instead of just the C: portion.

I re-ran the PowerShell script from earlier, but the file looked the same as the one you thought I had edited, so that worries me a bit. Windows is still installing updates, and I've got that scan going of the storage partition, so I'm going to let those finish, reboot, install any further updates, and then once it seems all situated, I'll re-run the script one more time and post the results.

1. Finish the update.

Please follow each and every step of this procedure completely.
This is Win 7 this is not XP, this not Vista.

When you finish, be sure to "validate" your Win 7. This step MUST be done.

Failure to validate or a cracked version of Win 7 will cause PowerShell to fail.

UPDATING YOUR WIN 7
1. ASSURE THAT YOU RECEIVE ALL UPDATES
WIN | type WINDOWS UPDATE | ENTER |
Change settings (left-hand column) |
checkmark all four of the boxes | OK button

Approve any dialog boxes presented. Let Windows install any update features.

WIN is the key with the Microsoft flag on top.

2. INSTALL CRITICAL UPDATES
Check for Updates (left-hand column)
Install ALL critical updates.
Restart your computer (even if not prompted)

Repeat this procedure until there are no more critical updates.

DO NOT TRUST the “Windows is up to date” in center of dialog. until you see that TWICE IN A ROW!

3. INSTALL IMPORTANT UPDATES
Use the “critical update” procedure until all important updates are installed.

4. INSTALL OPTIONAL UPDATES
Under Optional updates you will be presented with:
a) Microsoft Bing Desktop which is of questionable value
b) a list of about 34 language updates.

You can hide those updates so that aren't continually notified of those updates.
When you click on 34+ optional updates are available, then you
a) highlight all of the language updates,
b) right-click anywhere in the highlighted list.
c) click on Hide Updates,
d) OK button.
Install ALL other Optional Updates.
Use the “critical update” procedure.

UPDATE GOLDEN RULES
Install ALL, yes, ALL updates.
This is Win 7 and not Vista or XP (eXPired).

UPDATE IS HUNG –TAKING FOREVER
Hung is very doubtful unless you interrupted updates.

CTRL + SHIFT + ESC key combo will pop-up the Task Manager.
Lo and behold, Windows Update is still running!

You hold down the CTRL and SHIFT keys.
While holding them down, tap the ESC key once.
