Error 80070002 cannot update

I built a machine 3 years ago, and it had all sorts of BSOD errors. When I moved about a year ago, the computer went into a box and didn't come out until last week when my daughter decided she needed a computer.

Well, thanks to the help of people here, the BSOD have been solved. Now I have the issue of my install just won't upgrade. I get an Code 80070002 inside of windows update.

My windows shows as being registered and has the Genuine Microsoft logo on the bottom right of computer properties.

I have tried to follow the suggestions on microsoft's help site about disabling the Windows update service, and then deleting the c:\windows\SoftwareDistribution directory. This didn't seem to help at all.

I'd like not to have to wipe the hard drive and install all over again, as there is some software installed on the machine that I can't find anymore and would hate to loose it. But there are not any updates loaded on the machine as when I was getting the BSOD problems, the only solution was to disable the automatic updates and not apply any as that caused the machine to blue screen.

(it turned out it was bluescreening because the motherboard was twisted when it screwed down and caused memory issues).

If it isn't one thing it's got to be another. HELP

First run CHKDSK and SFC - (again??)

Please run a full CHKDSK and SFC scan....
type in the Search box
CMD.EXE
right-click on the only file that is found
Select Run as Administrator
- the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up
At the Command prompt, type
CHKDSK C: /R
and hit the Enter key.

You will be told that the drive is locked,
and the CHKDSK will run at he next boot - hit the Y key, and then reboot.

The chkdsk will take a few hours depending on the size
of the drive, so be patient!

After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally
(possibly after a second auto-reboot) - then run the SFC

SFC -System File Checker - Instructions
Click on the Start button
type in the Search box
CMD.EXE
right-click on the only file that is found
Select Run as Administrator - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up
At the Command prompt, type

SFC /SCANNOW

and hit the Enter key

Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.

Try running the CheckSUR tool - System Update Readiness Tool that fixes Windows Update problems is available for Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008 R2, and Windows Server 2008

assuming it 'installs' OK - or even if not - post the CheckSUR.log and CheckSUR.persist.log files and someone will take a look.

I ran chkdsk and it didn't find any errors.

I can't get SFC to run. I have tried running it in normal windows, safe mode and also from the recovery option from the win7 install DVD.

I get the error "Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service"

From the recovery I tried to do the offline option ie:

sfc /SCANNOW /OFFBOOTDIR=e:\ /OFFWINDIR=e:\windows

As in recovery, the windows7 drive is mapped to my e:\

CheckSUR I downloaded the KB947821 as per the link and it just hangs in the install of the util. I will give it a try again.

Addendum:

I re-ran the KB947821 and it takes about 1 hour to run, but I am lost as to were it would have put the log files that you said it generates.

You would seem to have run the tool twice last night? - as well as having had to run it twice at the beginning of last year.
Every time, you've had major corruption - and major corruption had remained dafter the run.
This cycle, the results are better (you only have two manifest files missing at the end of the run).
Perhaps you should review what you've been doing to see if you can pin down the cause, rather than fix the broken system.

See if SFC will work now - did CHKDSK work, previously?

If it's improving things, then I will run it a few more times to see if I can get it working right again.

I tried to follow one of the microsoft solutions that you put your original windows7 install DVD into your running win7 and do an upgrade install over the current install selecting the use internet for updates. That didn't work all that well.

I will look into if I can get a win7 install with the SP1 pre-loaded to see if that works better. The fun of keeping windows working.

As far as the corruption goes. it might be from a BSOD that was had last year that it never really recovered from.

Thanks for the help. i will post if i get it fixed

There is no point in running it more than it alreadu has been - it can only do so much.
An upgrade/repair install would probably not have been possible for you without downloading a new Win7 disk, since your disk is probably RTM, while your current install is SP1.

You can download an SP1 ISO file from the links here.... Microsoft
burn the file to create the disk ( do NOT just copy it to disk!), then try a repair install with that.

I'll leave you to do the repair install, but feel free to give me a shout if you want me to trace and source those manifests :)

I have tried to do the upgrade install and it doesn't work. it gets to second step (after copying the files) and then it says that it cannot continue and reboot and retry with the use updates option selected.

But I have. And my current install does not have SP1 installed. I am trying to search for a copy of the manifest files. I am not sure if I just need to re-copy them to the winsxs directory and all will be good.

Hello Matt and welcome to the forums

Could you attach the following file to your next post please?

C:\Windows\system32\config\COMPONENTS (It has no file extension)

You will probably have to zip it up before uploading it.

This file is a sub-hive of HKLM that contains all of the information about your Windows Updates history :) From this, I will be able to see what updates those manifest files came from; we will then be able to download a clean copy of those updates and extract the necessary manifest files.

Yes, it is just a simple replace. But you will have to mess with file permissions to get it in, so we tend to use an alternative way. I'll talk you through it if we get to that stage :)

Tom

Thankyou Tom.. you help is very much appreciated.

Attached is the Componants file ziped up. I also put in the 3 log files just in case.

I was thinking I'd have to try my luck at taking a ghost snapshot image of my system as it stands right now, and then wipe the drive and reinstall a new copy of windows7 to see if it will make the missing directories so I can back them up and then restore my original image. But if someone can help me by figuring out the source then that would be excellent and have a probably higher success rate based on my past luck.

So I re-built a new windows 7 and it has the folders that my original copy says are not there. So I copied the files over to a flash drive with good intention of copying the missing directories over.

Here is the kicker... you can't do it in safe mode.. so I booted into the recovery command prompt only to find the directories are actually there. You just can't see them. Can't remove them. And windows still gives me that error.

What next??
