Error 800B0100 Security Update KB2698365

Hi, I've been trying to install Update KB2698365 for weeks with no luck. I've followed any instructions I could find online, such as disabling my Firewall, running the relevant FixIt, running the Update Readiness Tool, and installing the update manually.

The CheckSUR log from the last time I ran the Update Readiness Tool lists the errors pasted below. Any help would be much appreciated.

Some more details, every time I run the Fix It troubleshooter on this page (Error 0x800B0100 when you try to install Windows Updates or Microsoft Updates) it finds and "fixes" the following problems. The next time I run it, it finds them again so obviously they're not being fixed.

Windows Update components must be repaired - Fixed
Problem with Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) - Fixed
Security files are not registered - Fixed

Windows Update Package Replacement


  1. Please download the attached file, Packs.zip and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Right-click on the file and select Extract All...
  3. Tick the box labelled Show extracted files when complete then click Extract
  4. A window will open showing two folders, Manifests and Packages
  5. Open the Manifests folder and copy the files into the following folder (if there are any files)

    C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\Winsxs\Manifests
  6. Open the Packages folder and copy the files into the following folder (if there are any files)

    C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\Servicing\Packages
  7. Run the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) again
  8. When the SURT finishes installing, copy (Ctrl + C) and paste (Ctrl + V) the contents of the SURT log into your next post please:

    C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.persist.log



You will probably be shown the error code 0x8024200D after performing this fix, if so, please download and install the update from this link. It must be downloaded using Internet Explorer.

I did as you said, and got the error you predicted. After downloading and installing from the link you sent it seems like everything is up to date!

I've pasted the contents of CheckSUR.log below. Do you think I need to do anything else to avoid future problems? When trying to fix this problem, I ran MBAM, sfc, chkdsk and anything else I could think of and there didn't seem to be anything else wrong...

You're most welcome for the help - I enjoy fixing these issues. Your CheckSUR log is showing no more issues, looks like we've nailed it in one.

You can't really do much to prevent problems like these to be honest, they just happen out of the blue. But you know who to come to if you hit a problem like this again! :) With any file corruption, it could be a sign of a failing hard disk, but you ran chkdsk so that should have caught any problem.

hi tom,im having a similar problem with downloading the security updates for win 7.
are the files contained in the packs.zip suitable for use on a 32 bit system?
the update i cant get is KB2631813.

Windows Update Package Replacement


  1. Please download the attached file, Packs.zip and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Right-click on the file and select Extract All...
  3. Tick the box labelled Show extracted files when complete then click Extract
  4. A window will open showing two folders, Manifests and Packages

Hi scorzeze,

It's good that you asked me before just going ahead with the fix :) Since making that post above, I have amended my instructions to include a warning about the fix being specific to that user. So in answer to your question, no they aren't suitable. It isn't much hassle to find the ones that you need though so if you make a new thread of your own containing the CheckSUR log located in the directory below, I'll be more than happy to help you out. If you don't have this log, run the System Update Readiness Tool first.
