That reply was pretty terse, and also incomplete.

Try this:

Right click + select "Properties"
Security tab
Click "Advanced"
Owner tab
Change owner to yourself
Click "Edit"
Check "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects"
Click OK

Question. Sorry for bringing this back up.

The error posted by the OP is what happens when I follow the steps that were posted below. Therefore, clearly, the steps don't work. Help?

The OP was talking about taking "full control" which is most likely to be assumed he is trying to grant full permission access. The fix that shiggity posted mentions taking "ownership" which is different than "permissions" read the instructions carefully and it may fix your problem.

I need further help

That reply was pretty terse, and also incomplete.

Change owner to yourself

I followed these instructions exactly. It took quite a while to apply the new ownership to everything on the drive, and I got "access denied" on a few files with odd names like8en8r9figi9t. When it was all finished, I tried to delete an old Windows folder on that drive (not my current system folder--I double-checked) and it started deleting, appeared tp delete a lot of files, then it said You require permission from "user" to make changes to this profile (where "user" is the my actual username.) In other words, it's refusing to delete the file on the grounds that I need permission from myself. FWIW, the file is FXSEXT.ecf. I check "do this for all current items (12200 found)" and click try again, and try again, but it just repeats the same error on that file.

I notice that the folder is read-only. I try to remove that attribute, grant Admin permission when prompted, but it just comes back and says an error occurred applying attributes to the file FSXEXT.ecf, access is denied. I doubt there's anything specil about that file, I suspect it's just the first file in the folder.

Also, this folder now shows up with a tiny padlock icon on it. This is something I haven't seen before.

I did check and I am still the owner of this drive, and I am able to change attributes of and delete other folders on it.

Sorry, I don't know how I fixed it--I just kept mucking around with permissions and stuff until it worked. Just keep trying and eventually it'll work...

Do you still need the fix for this issue?

Get out the way, everyone! I've got the solution!!! (Finally) (This was on the Desktop on Windows 8, but I think it's going to be the same process)

I went through all of the other responses, and they're on the right track, but they're forgetting one key part:

When trying to remove the Windows.old folder, you still have to change the permissions and uncheck the Read-only box (For some of the files) (You may also need to click "ignore all", as there are a few small straggler files that I can't figure out how to remove), but the key is this (This allowed me to delete about 60 of the 74 gigs in my Windows.old folder):

After following the steps to change permissions and all that (As explained in previous user posts):

Under the Security tab, click Advanced
After changing the "Owner" to your account, click on your account under "Permission entries"
Now click the newly available "Edit" button below it
For "Type", set it to "Allow"
For "Applies to", set it to "This folder, subfolders and files"
With all of the basic permissions checked, click the box that says "Only apply these permissions to objects and/or containers within this container"

Now, delete the folder. But don't throw a party just yet. For me, the bulk of the files were still there in number, but the files taking up the lionshare of the space were removed.

For the rest of the files, I used AVG's Shredder, which came with my purchase of AVG 1-Click Maintenance. If you're reading this, it's because the file shredding was a success and I was able to click "Submit reply" AFTER the operation was done. Hence, my PC was A-OK! ... If you're not reading this, it means it went horribly wrong and my PC's been ruined. (I kid you not, this is how I'm attempting to vouch for it)

Method: "Fast delete, 3 repetitions".

PS: It took hours to complete the file shredding. So... heads up. You might want to just select "1 repetition".

PPS: The AVG File Shredder dropped it from about 80,000 files down to a mere 58 files, and from about 14 gigs to 21.8 megabytes.

I know this is an old thread, but FYI ... I am getting the same Access Denied message, but my issue looks a little different in that I don't even have the ability to select PROPERTIES, Sharing and Security, etc on the folder in question. I can't delete it or browse into it. Only a couple of not very important folder for me, so I am moving on, but in my case it looks like there may be some corruption or something else going on.

I would appreciate elaboration on this...

I have a portable hard drive. I replaced my old PCs crashed internal hard drive, now all is locked on my portable hard-drive. I am doing as directed on claiming ownership of the hard-drive. however each folder I have to claim individually then I can access the files inside folders.

Here is my problem.. I have to change access for each individual file to my ownership or I can not view nor delete them. I have 1000s of pictures etc. this could take months. I need instruction on how to mass claim ownership etc.

FYI
when I change owner ship at the drive I get this error which I have to hit continue for all files/folders within

An error occurred while applying security information:
"(each file and folder I have)"
failed to enumerate objsects in the container. Access is denied

Ownership key

Ownership was my issue here. The access rights seem to be confused somehow. I needed to make sure I included all the subdirs below. After I took ownership I then with back and replaced all the privs below as well. That solved the issue for us. I just wanted to add this to help out others. Thanks for the above posts.
