I have an Asus PRO55 series, it had Vista Home Premium on it, and I tried an upgrade to Windows 7 Ultimate (32bit)...Everything went fine, but before the first user login screen comes up, it goes to Error can't open c:\recovery.dat. and then huge red text (on white screen)comes up saying ERROR:

Laptop then won't do anything but shutdown using the 5 second button method. Upon restart, all I get is the grey screen of death.

Have tried (firstly) upgrade, then two clean installs - same problem. All booted from DVD. Now reinstalling Vista (via recovery disks) so that the machine is operational.
Have tried to install with partitions.... and full drive

Now able to look at the management bits (recovery finished) It shows a Disk 0 with 9.77gb..."Healthy primary partition" and a "VistaOS (C:) 223.12gb NTFS Healthy, system boot, active, Crash Dump, Primary Partition
Have taken screen shots of the disk management and OS

Strange that the Asus X55S machine that I'm using to write this, went to Windows 7 very easily. What have I not done correctly ....
Please have patience - this is the first time I have "posted" so you can appreciate the level of frustration.

Thanks for the reply. I had read many of the hints prior to upgrading. Have now loaded specs of the machine I'm trying to upgrade.

The machine will load Windows 7 - no trouble. It's that after installation when it goes to run that I get the error can't open c:\recovery.dat thing that leads to the white screen with large red ERROR words.

What could be on the ASUS that conflicts. I've used SIW to provide a report, and grabbed a screen shot of the disk managment

Follow these steps :
1.Boot from Windows 7 installation disc.
2.Select Language and Next.
3.Choose "Repair Your Computer".
4.Choose the problem windows, and click Next.
5.Now, choose "Command Prompt".
When the command prompt window is opened, type "bootsect /nt60 ALL /mbr". This will update the mbr of the hd.
When done, restart the computer.
P.S.: Use this on your own risk. IT worked in my K50lj
