Error Code 0x80070017

Hello, I currently have Windows 7 Home Premium. Quite recently my computer has gone horrible, absolutely bad. I get bad FPS in game, I can BARELY run multimedia programs and the generalness of the computer is just SLOW.

You can check at the bottom or something of my PC specs, you'll see this computer is not slow, I have tried formatting about 6 times now with my Home Premium disk, and the problem persists. So now I have an Ultimate disk. The installation will complete the "Copying windows files" task in seconds, but sticks at 0% on "Expanding files" for about 30 seconds. I will then receive an error that reads "Windows cannot install required files. The file may be corrupt or missing. Make sure all files required for installation are available, and restart the application. Error code: 0x80070017".


Also, would Home Premium be my problem towards experiencing these extremely slow symptoms? I have checked all my hardware, it is fine. My friend who works at Best Buy said Home Premium works good for a little while and then goes to shit, thus you need to buy Ultimate and such.

I literally CAN not even put a video into the track in Sony Vegas, can't use Photoshop, and don't even talk to me about After Affects. My computer used to be VERY amazing.

I understand this is for Windows Updates; however I have seen it fix problems like yours as well. Same error message, remember Windows is all tied together.

Okay but I don't see any options for Windows 7, only Vista and under.

Where did you get your copy of Ultimate? If you burned it yourself, then try again using ImgBurn at 4x speed.

Try install with SATA controller set to AHCI first, then IDE if necessary. Remove all but 2gb of RAM, test your RAM using memtest86, swap RAM sticks. Test your HD using maker's diag/repair CD scan after running http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/433-disk-check.html

If you want to try to salvage your current install, run Malwarebytes and MS Security Essentials which you should use in place of your current AV. Google repeat errors in Event Viewer>Admin View. Run sfc /scannow to check system file integrity.

1) Are these disks pre-manufactured or home made? Burn or get a new copy of the disk (Burn at a slow Speed 2x/4x and use good quality media), if possible you can try a different burner.

Alternatively, try installing from a USB drive.

2) Your computer running slow may be due to any reason ranging from hardware/ software conflicts, malware, bad drivers etc. But there is no such thing as a generic home premium machine running slower than a machine on Ultimate or pro.

Understood, but the error you are getting maps to:

ERROR_CRC                                                     winerror.h
Data error (cyclic redundancy check).

So, either the DVD you're installing from has an error, or the disk does. I'd suggest following WindowsStar's advice, because the install is failing due to the inability to extract files and copy them to disk. The fact that you're seeing such slow performance, even after rebuilding it many times would lead me to believe perhaps the HDD underneath has started it's death throes.

It is a copy I burned my self, but it is exactly like a legitimate copy, and it checked out alright. Worked for almost everybody.
