Error code 0X80070103 insufficient space

I am attempting to install Windows Vista on a computer that already has Windows 7. I have an empty partition. C Dr. has 620 GB and the partition has 250 GB. But I get the error message 0X80070103 saying there's not enough space to accommodate the Windows installation temp files. Help please

You may need to completely wipe the entire Hard Disk Drive to get rid of all the old Windows code for the best possible space to install Windows to, then use diskpart to create and mark active a partition(s) to do the install to, have a look through the information presented below and be sure to post back with any further questions you may have and to keep us informed.


After you have copied out or made back-ups of the data you need to save to external media, then boot the Windows 7 installation media to use Step One of this tutorial at the first link below to do a wipe (secure erase) to the entire Hard Disk Drive / Solid State Drive.

:info: Whether you use diskpart to run either the clean all command to completely wipe a HDD / SSD or just the clean command to remove the format configuration data and don't use diskpart to create at least a single partition to do the installation to, letting the Windows installer do the format you will end up with the new Windows 7 System Reserved partition, if you want to make your own decision whether this partition is added, study these two (2) options below.

• Then if you do not want to create the new Windows 7 "System Reserved" partition use the outline in Step Two #2 to create, format and mark Active a single 100GB partition to do the installation to.
• If you do want to create the "System Reserved" partition use the outline in Step Two #3 to create, format and mark Active the System Reserved partition and then create and format the 100GB partition to do the installation to.

Either way, running the "clean all" then creating and formatting the partition(s) using diskpart will get you the best possible space to do a clean install of Windows 7 to; you can always extend the Windows partition to include the remaining unallocated space on the HDD / SSD or create additional Primary partitions or an Extended partition after the installation completes if you choose.

If you don't want to wipe the entire HDD, you can do a partition-specific wipe of the Windows partition using the Partition Wizard Bootable Disk (PWBD) have a look at Option Three in the tutorial at this link below.

Thank you for your timebut I shouldn't have to go through all this just to install a second OS. Why am I getting the error reading when I have so much space to put anything on. I guess when you get as big as Windows you can just put on any product you want. Again thank you I just can't wipe my disk clean and reinstall the programs I have.

Perhaps just doing a partition-specific wipe to the target partition will sort the issue.

   Note

No matter what you do, if you do a clean install you will have to reinstall all the programs/apps that you use as they integrate themselves into the Windows registry and are not moveable from one Windows installation to another so be sure to save the program activation keys where applicable.

First download the PWBD ISO file to the desktop, be sure to get the PWBD and not the installed version; scroll down to see the download link for the bootable CD ISO file at this link below.

Then use ImgBurn to burn the ISO to a CD, at no greater than 4x speed with a verify; it was designed for use and works best from a CD rather that a DVD then boot the created CD to make the changes.

This tip helped me solve my inability to install Win 7 SP1 (but same error code). There are lots of generic tips elsewhere that didn't help, such as doing a clean boot, disabling AV etc.

For some unknown reason, my 25 MB System Reserved drive E was Active, not C. No wonder I was getting a full disk error.

I read somewhere that changing it to C would render my PC unbootable and I'd need to do an In-Place Upgrade. Yes, the PC won't boot owing to a missing boot manager.

To cut a long story short, I started that process, but I ignored the pop-up page that tells you that you already have Win 7 installed so you should boot normally and insert the DVD later. Instead I chose the Repair option, which indeed repaired the boot manager problem and now I had a bootable, Active C drive. Now the SP1 installed happily.

You should never have a 25mb System Rserved drive, nor should it be on another HD. It needs to be at least 100mb.

To repair Win7 in this situation, you need to make sure it's marked Active then boot the DVD or Repair CD to run Startup Repair up to 3 separate times to write the boot files to Win7.

If any Active partition exists elsewhere on the system at the time either mark it Inactive or unplug it, as the Repair will (re)write the System Boot files to the first Active partition found.

If you want to post back a screenshot of your full Disk Mgmt drive listings (showing all columns) with map, using Snipping TOol in Start Menu, we can look it over for you to make sure no potential problems still exist.

The System Reserved area is on the same physical HD as C. Here is the image.

Looks like C holds your System Active boot files, so the midget SysReserved partition isn't doing anything. YOu could delete and recover its space using Partition Wizard bootable CD "Resize" function, but it's hardly worth the effort for 25mb. You're good to go as is.

Thanks. I may need to delete it because it leads to a popup error that one of my drives is out of space. Can I use Disk Management to do it, or use Partition Wizard bootable CD?

Have a look at Option Two / Step #s One and Two, to see how to use the Partition Wizard bootable CD to recover that 25MB into the Windows 7 partition; skip step #3 as you have the Windows 7 partition already active.

Though if ever you need to do another startup repair to correct boot issues it may try to recreate that 25MB as the "System Reserved" partition if you just leave that unallocated space there.


You could use Method One of this one to create that space as an Extended partition and just leave it as "Free Space" and that wouldn't be able to happen then.
