Error code 43 from graphics driver HP notebook

HP DV6500zCTO Notebook upgraded to Win 7
Suddenly a few days back the "aero" effects stopped working. I traced it back to an error on the graphics driver.
I have removed the driver, ram driver sweep to remove all traces, downloaded new version from Nvida, allowed Windows 7 Update to find driver and all continue to fail with the same error.
Was thinking of running "repair/Update" but I have SP1 installed and it won't run from DVD with SP1 installed.
