Error Codes When Trying To Install MSE and Win7 Firewall

I'm not sure if this is the right forum for this problem, but I will give it a try.

I am running Win7/64bit. About three weeks ago I removed my internet security suite in favor of using Windows firewall and MSE. I made sure that the internet security suite was completely removed from my computer.

I went to Control Panel>System and Security>Windows Firewall. On the right side of the page, it said that Windows Firewall was not using the recommended settings. There is a Use Recommended Settings button to the right of that. Nothing else was there. On the left side of the page was a list which included Turn Windows Firewall on or off.

When I clicked on the Use Recommended Settings button, I got an error message......
"Windows Firewall can't change some or your settings". Error code 0x8007042c.
I then clicked on the Turn Windows Firewall on or off link. Nothing happened.

I gave up there and decided to try installing MSE v2. Another error message with an different error code. Error code 0x80070643.

I did a Google search, found some things that were recommended, but nothing seems to work. I was thinking of doing a Win 7 repair, but not sure if I should try that. This HP Pavilion didn't come with a Win 7 CD. It came with four restoration disks. I do have a Win 7 CD, but not sure I want to use it on this computer. Any ideas what is wrong, or what I should do?

Thank you.

For starters go to the website of the security suite, get the uninstall tool and use it. We can help if you have problems

After doing that, type services.msc in the start search box. When services window opens, right click on Windows Firewall, choose properties, set it to 'automatic' and start the service.
Do the same for 'MSSE', which is Microsoft Security Essentials. Also make sure Security Center is set to automatic and started.

Since you don't want to use the Win 7 disk- which at the moment may not be needed.
Try running SFC /scannow. This will attempt to repair/restore registry errors.
You will need to run it up to three times or until errors are fixed.
A window will open at some point saying it can not fix all errors etc. It did fix some of them.
SFC cannot fix all errors in one pass so that is the reason to run it three times.
So you run it again.

Mike

I plan on running the SFC /scannow, but I have a question. If it comes down to where I have no choice but to run Windows repair, does it matter that the Win 7 CD did not come with this computer? I bought the CD before I purchased this HP. I was going to use it on another computer. This HP came only with restore disks.

Your System Specs show this version on the PC.
Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit

Double check we want or I want to be sure. Start Menu search bar type in System Information and click. The right side of new window it will tell you the version. Just to be sure.

What exactly is on the Win 7 CD? Should be marked on the face of the CD.

Well if they are exactly the same version then no problem for repair install. When you get to activation you just select to do it later. It is only copying the registry files.

If different versions then I will need to get someone who knows more on the subject.

Of course it does ... where did the Windows 7 DVD (not CD) come from? If it wasn't purchased , or the original Windows OS (on your machine) didn't offer you an 'any time upgrade', then you're paddeling thru' thick mud.

You need to look at the codes from winerror.h. The second one means very little, but the first one means a lot.

After doing that, type services.msc in the start search box. When services window opens, right click on Windows Firewall, choose properties, set it to 'automatic' and start the service.
Do the same for 'MSSE', which is Microsoft Security Essentials. Also make sure Security Center is set to automatic and started.

Since you haven't been able to install Microsoft Security Essential yet, I don't quite see how you have that service yet. Surely you cannot have, unless I am very much mistaken.

Can you please make sure all of the following are started. If any of them don't exist, please tell me which ones. If any fail to start, please tell me which ones. I do not necessarily expect them all to be on your machine. Thanks! Display names:

I ran SFC /scannow three times. All runs showed no problems.

The version of my OS is different then the version number on the Windows 7 DVD I have. I think I will re-install my security suite, and just let things go as they are.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to help me with this. Your help was very much appreciated.

The only ones that show started are, Windows Management Instrumentation, Security Centre, DCOM Server Process Launcher, Remote Procedure Call (RPC).

MSE, and Microsoft Antimalware Engine are not listed since I don't have MSE installed.

Hello!

That is so odd! Error 1068 is a Dependency Failure. The only common dependency, or the only one at all is Remote Procedure Call (RPC) but apparently that one works! Strange system! Please open an elevated Command Prompt: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/783-elevated-command-prompt.html

Type tasklist /svc > %UserProfile%\Desktop\svc.txt and press enter.

Please upload or copy and paste inline the contents of svc.txt from your Desktop.
