I'm having trouble using offline files. I am trying to use offline files on my laptop, but when I try to open files or folders I am getting different error messages having to do with connecting or sharing.
Some folders say
"Error while reconnecting Z: to \\\(Computer Name)\(Profile name) Microsoft Windows Network: The local device name is already in use"
Or on some folders I can open the folder path and see the file, but when trying to open it I am only able to open a read only version.
I have tried several times to go into the original folders on my desktop and change the sharing options, which is maybe why some folders I can open and view, and others not even open. I have followed the tutorials shown here but somehow keep running into this problem.
How do I go about setting up the files correctly?
Currently I have the homegroup set up. When I started using the laptop I set it up, then when I couldn't access the files I thought I read somewhere that sharing through a mapped network drive was an easier way to share files. I disassociated the homegroup and mapped a Z: drive, but no luck. I went back and re-associated the homegroup with the same problem. These are my personal machines, and neither are on a network administrated by someone else, meaning I am the only network administrator setting up permissions.
My desktop is running Windows 7 Ultimate, Service Pack 1. And my laptop is running Windows 7 Professional, Service Pack 1.
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. To go back and retrace everything I did to set up isn't possible as I have tried several times using different options. If I need to format the laptop drive that's possible as it hasn't shared correctly since I installed an SSD in it, and using it as an extension of main machine is the reason for having it. Meaning I really only need to use the shared files. No files in the native user account are important except for Outlook data files.
Be kind I'm not a pro, just a home user.
