Most times when I start my machine or just turn on my monitors (the Windows Display setting is set to turn off at 20 minutes, sleep is set to Never), I find that Windows is installing software. Sometimes it's successful, sometimes it fails.

I see others have had this issue, but the offered remedies (reinstall drivers) did not work (I consider I may not have done it properly).

? How can I get Windows to install the software correctly and then stop attempting to re-install the software?

(Below is the text of the message I get.)

Hi

The hardware for your model is described as:

802.11 a/b/g/n PCI Express x1 wireless card & built-in Bluetooth wireless USB module for PCs

Check the Device Manager first:
Before trying to install the Bluetooth driver you need to check whether the Bluetooth device is
added to the Hardware list in your Operating System. You could check this by verifying the
enabled Bluetooth option in the Device manager on the Control Panel. If it is not enabled,
Operating System would not detect the Bluetooth Device in your system and you would not able
to install the driver using automatic update option.

You can find the drivers here, I suggest you try the driver found under "Original"

First select your operating system.

The version you want is 8.0.0.144 Dated 2010-01-08 Size 1.85Mb

"Original driver for the Atheros 802.11 a/b/g/n Dual Wireless Network Module"

There are instructions (under more info) how to install and heres the link:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...en&cc=us&dlc=en&sw_lang=&product=4147109#N297

I would uninstall any previous drivers you have installed.

Hope this helps
Cheers

Dave

I followed your instructions (including uninstall previous drivers), attempted to install the driver from the link and got the message:

Original Atheros Wireless Networking Controller Driver

Your system does not meet the minimum requirements for this update.
Update has been cancelled. (9996)

So, what does that mean?

I attempted to install the .NET Framework and was informed it was already installed.

I attempted to install the Lite-On and got the same error message as the Atheros (9996).

You first post mentions a built-in Bluetooth wireless USB module but I thought I had no such thing.

Are you using Bluetooth on your laptop? If not unhide Devices in the View tab of Device manager, find all Bluetooth devices (probably with an ! error) and disable them.

Atheros wireless driver has nothing to do with bluetooth. If it is listed in Device Manager then is most likely your wireless driver so should be installed. Plug in by wire to check optional Windows Updates after enabling http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/2803-device-installation-settings.html. This is the way to also get the bluetooth drivers if you do need them. If none are delivered after several rounds of Updates then import them from the PC model's Support Downloads webpage: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/97061-driver-install-device-manager.html

Set Updates to Automatic, always install all Important and Optional Updates.

Other best practices for getting and keeping a perfect install are here: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/219487-clean-reinstall-factory-oem-windows-7-a.html#post1839164.

Are you using Bluetooth on your laptop?
Yes, but this issue is with my desktop unit. I apologize if I should have been explicit in that information, but my System Specs do indicate my machine is a desktop unit.

Did I miss something? I appreciate your help, but I admit I'm confused now.

Follow Gregs advice above for installing the Bluetooth drivers etc and post back any results.

You wish to use these drivers on your PC? Yes or No?

Follow option two here to automatically install drivers via Windows Updates: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/2803-device-installation-settings.html

Go to Start>All Programs>Windows Updates, set it to update Automatically. then run Check for Updates, install all Important and Optional Updates. Were drivers installed? Reboot PC.

Next type Device Manager in Start Search box, on View tab Show Hidden Devices. Look for Devices that are without their drivers. If you plan to use them, doubleclick, choose Drive tab, then Update Driver automatically. Do this for each driver which is needed.

If you know you don't want to use any of these devices, on Driver tab, Disable the device.

If drivers cannot be installed automatically, go to the Support Downloads webpage for your model PC or Device missing its driver, download and install the driver.

If you have a problem determining the exact make/model of the Device due to inadequate information provided in Device Manager or your PC specs, trace this information using http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/73420-hardware-identification.html.

Let us know if you have any questions to get this done.
