error disc check - interference

when I go to computer / properties / check disc for errors - it gives me the option of - automatically fix file errors - or - scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors - if I click the first one it says cannot check while disc is being used ( norton? )- and the second one seems to want to go on for hours and hours, but the interesting thing is that my norton anti-virus keeps popping up a small window that says it is doing background work. and when I cancel the disc check process the norton background window disappears. so what is norton doing or is it a windows 7 issue?

Turn off NOrton

Your computer seems to be normal You must indicate that you want to check the drive and then turn off the compuer and then boot up

It takes long, about an hour or more. This is normal.

The way you access the first feature is to go to computer>left click>right click on drive c>go to properties>tools and then check disc for errors. then restart computer.
