Error message when attempting to migrate messages from WLM Desktop App

Hi Everyone,

I have been using the Windows Live Mail (WLM) Desktop email app for several years. Due to a recent change with my ISP I am now required to change the Server settings for my email account from POP to IMAP. I have installed Outlook 2013, and am now making an effort to migrate my emails.

Whilst many of my email folders in WLM are migrating fine some are producing the error message below -

I have tried many things in an effort to overcome this error.

1). Scanning my hard drive for viruses (using a Trinity Rescue disk, and the Clam Anti-Virus program). Some viruses were found and successfully removed.
2). Scanning the hard drive for hardware issues
3). Cloning my old (mechanical) hard drive to an SSD
4). Scanning with MalwareBytes
5). Scanning with Adw Cleaner
6). Scanning with Junk Removal Tool

I am now almost certain that there are no hardware issues, or viruses. However the error message above is persisting. I have even checked the length of the email folder, and email file name to ensure that there is no exceeding the 255 character limit (which there isn't).

I have all but run out of ideas here. Any suggestions, or shared wisdom will be greatly appreciated.

I forgot to mention in my original post that I have adequate storage space.

I have now actually managed to identify two separate issues that WLM cannot handle when exporting messages.

The first is special characters in folder names, e.g.: a folder with the name 'A/B' (ignoring the single talking marks) will cause the indicated error message. I got around this by removing back slashes and replacing them with dashes, e.g.: 'A-B'.

The second issue is a little trickier; WLM doesn't like it when a folder contains more than one attachment with exactly the same file details. For example if you have two messages and both messages contain an attachment called 'xyz.pdf', and both of these files have exactly the same file size, then the error message will also be produced. When a folder only contains a limited number of messages it is relatively easy to ferret out the attachments, but when dealing with folders like 'Deleted Items' (tens of thousands of messages) the task can be near impossible.

At the moment I am trying to find some software that will allow me to refine the search capabilities in WLM so that I can more readily detect the troublesome attachments.

If anybody has any suggestions they will be greatly appreciated.

Hello Davo mate maybe that some of the WLM messages contain content that will not sync with Outlook - personally I do not like Outlook as I find it very bitty and messy in the GUI.

When I heard that WLM was on the way out I switched to Thunderbird it carries over all my WLM gear (using the same config for in and out mail and you can make it look like WLM in any case.
