I have just upgraded my computer from Windows XP Pro to Windows 7 Pro 64 bit with a clean install. I backup all of my Microsoft Office 2007 files, such as Word, Excel and Powerpoint from my documents folder and off my desktop. Now in Windows 7 I restore all the files and the Word documents and Excel documents but everything on the desktop would not open. Need SOME HELP

If everything in your documents folder that you restored opened, then try this

create a new folder in your documents folder - called DesktopXP (can be named anything you like
Copy all of the files on your desktop that you restored to the new folder DesktopXP
See if they will open
What kind of file are they - are they real files or are they shortcuts?

Slartybart, the files are Microsoft Word (doc.) and Microsoft Excel documents, most of the files are resumes and spreadsheets. I cannot remember if all were shortcuts but some were save directly to my desktop in Windows XP. I copied the files from my desktop in Windows XP to a USB flash drive. When Windows 7 was finish installing I put the files back from the USB drive to the desktop in Windows 7. When I try to open them its says a drive or network path associated with this file cannot be found. We DO NOT have any servers, shared computers or any networks each person has there own independent computer nothing shared.

Desktop icons are usually just shortcuts to the actual files. You need to copy over your documents, pictures, etc everything else. Does it have a tiny arrow on the icon on them? If so they are shortcuts. You need to make sure you are copying the actual files over.

Did you reinstall your Office 2007 program. If not, you will have to reinstall it & activate it again. Once you have reinstalled it you can copy your documents & files over to your appropriate libraries & they should then open.

Documents & files can be copied & move to a new operating system but Programs have to be reinstalled.

It sounds as though they are shortcuts, and if they are, the path to the actual file is most likely different.

Try this on or of two of the files that you have troble opening:
Right click the file
select properties

Post a screen shot of the properties window

- if it has a shortcut tab, you can correct the path to the real file (or you can find the real file and create a new shortcut by right clicking the real file, select Create Shortcut and then place that new shortcut on your Desktop if you like)

- if properties shows an extension (.xls, .doc, etc) and the file will not open, then we need to chase down why.
