Error Playing MKV on XBOX 360

For some reason, I am no longer able to play MKV files through WMC on my 360.

The error message it's giving me is:

Cannot play Video,

The file type is not recognized and cannot be played. Either the correct codec (a file that compresses/decompresses audio or video) is not installed or the file is corrupt.

It used to play fine when I had installed K-lite codec pack as well as Divx direct show filters.

However, I had bad ram and had to re-install Windows 7 and since then, playing MKV movies on my 360 through WMC does not work!

Any suggestions?

I've un-installed all the codec packs like Divx and k-lite... still not working...

Thanks,

Jay

You need to get them to play on the pc first
You will need to reinstall codecs if you have removed them all

Check here Matroska Media Container - Homepage | Matroska for more info on mkv & similar

Post back if you get stuck, sure we can get this sorted for you

Thanks for the info!

I re-installed a windows 7 codec pack with all the goodies and it's working now!

You were correct in that they would not play on my computer until I re-installed the codecs...

Something must have gotten messed up somewhere...

Thanks,

Jay

Actually, problem not totally fixed. I can play some MKV videos, but not all.

There are some that will play for all of 30 seconds then freezes. If left, it will skip along and play 1-2 min, then freeze again.

I can't seem to play A Christmas Carol (which has subtitles on the master file... as in not a seperate file).

I have another movie, The Proposal, which is a MKV file and I can't play it at all... Gives me a video error message....

All of these videos play fine, with no errors on my computer....

I have similar issues, but with most of files do that. I suggest installing CCCP, and keeping your Windows 7 codecs installed. Also, are you running a 64bit or 32bit OS?

I'm running a 64bit, and I have a hell of a time getting videos to work.

Thanks for the info! I'm glad (well not really) that I'm not the only one with problems...

I'm running W7 Pro 64bit.

I'll check out CCCP and see if that helps!

Cheers,

Jay

I just did a fresh format, I'm going to install the CCCP codecs, and see if the MKV files are playable with no issues. IF there aren't any issues, I'm going to make a restore point, but first, I'm going to install my necessary applications, i.e. Visual Studio, Adobe CS4 Master collection, 3D Studio Max, etc..

I'll write up some information on things I've encountered to help others, if I find a solution.

I uninstalled all of my codecs, re-installed just CCCP and DivX (MKV codec for Windows 7), no change in playability...

Fyi, don't use DivX. That program is a failure. I use VLC, & WMP. Foobar2000 for music, VLC/WMP for Movies/Shows. Don't use DivX and CCCP at the same time. They'll conflict.

ALLLLL RIGHT! I got ALL my movies playing properly!

I un-installed all of the other codec pacs as well as DivX. I then installed Sharky007 codec pack for Windows7 (plus the 64bit upgrade) and everything works properly now! YYYYYAAAAAAHHHHHOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

HOWEVER, I still had to install the DivX Wndows 7 MKV decoder in order for the picture to display properly on the xbox 360 and my TV. Without it, the picture looks like a crappy YouTube (very pixely) video and not a HD movie!

Cheers,

Jay

You must be using the DivX codecs then. Most Encoders, like me, use standard CCCP/Sharky007 codecs.

Good to hear you fixed it. Btw I don't suggest streaming blu-rays from your computer to XBOX. I find the quality of SD to be the same as HD/BR.

All I installed and use for Divx is the "DivX Plus Tech Preview: MKV on Windows 7"

I did not install anything else (like Divx players, codecs, direct show filters.....)

And I see a BIG difference between Blue Ray (High Def) on my 360 vs standard, so I'm going to continue doing what I'm doing thanks!

Maybe you don't have your settings correct?? :p;)

Nah. I've got things configured properly. The only thing I see a difference in is when I'm gaming. I'll look into your setup later :]
