ERROR Recovery.dat after upgrade help

Okay, I have an Asus G50Vt-X1, it had Vista Home Premium on it, and I did an upgrade to Windows 7 Ultimate...Everything went fine, but before the first user login screen comes up, it will just sit there, and a huge red text would come up saying ERROR: Cannot open recovery.dat or something along those lines, and it just loops back to that each time I try restarting. I see that a lot of asus users have the same problem with that, but I'm not too tech savvy...Some people say to delete the recovery.dat file, but idk how since I cant even login to the damn thing...I have my drivers cd and the Vista recovery cd that came with the laptop,and only the Windows 7 installation files. Can somebody please give me a fairly simple step by step guide on what to do? I won't be able to respond to questions quickly since I have school soon, but I couldn't sleep last night thinking about this -_-....Thanks

We have a thread that presents a lot of posssible installation problems. Yours is not specifically mentioned but most probalby one of the solutions will help you. Read the entire thread there are additional remedies toward the end of the thread. Good luck

Thanks for the reply, I looked through it but I didn't really see anything that could help me out =/ I can't run safe mode or anything. I read what other Asus users that had the same problem had to say about it...They were saying to delete the recovery partition and I should be good...but I don't know how to get to it. Since its so bad I can't even open safe mode.

Thank you theog, you gave me a possible clue. To the poster did you upgrade or do a clean install? If your programs did not need to be reinstalled, you did an upgrade. If that is the case, your problem will be solved as soon as we can do a clean install.

Yes I did an upgrade. I didn't save all of my files before I did the upgrade...but I don't really care about them now...I just want my laptop back up and running lol. How can I do a clean install now?

Go to bios, set to boot from DVD, then shut off computer and boot from the DVD. I will return with the detail instructions.

Thanks for the help. I just used the Vista Recovery Console to get my back to factory settings... I'm a little discouraged now to try and run the clean install lol... Something about running the recovery console and drivers as the last resort kind of gives me an uneasy feeling lol...

There is no ONE right answer, you do whatever makes you comfortable. We at the forum merely give you the ideas; its your choice.

If you've factory recovered to Vista, then there is no reason to do another in-place Upgrade which is an inferior upgrade to a clean install.

So boot the Win7 DVD, select Custom install, use Drive Options to format the Vista partition and install Win7 there.

The Win7 DVD is mostly driver-complete, with newer arriving in early Windows Updates. Any drivers then missing in the Device Manager can be found on your drivers CD or the Support Downloads webpage for your model computer, where there will also be favorite apps you can download.
