Error: Windows 7 Professional Activation error (0xC004F074)

Hello,

I own a Lenovo Thinkpad X220 running Windows 7 Professional, which I bought through my school around two years ago, and Windows 7 Pro was pre installed. Yesterday I opened my laptop and it told me that my Windows was counterfeit and I had to reactivate it again. I tried to reactivate it, but it gave me to Error (0xC004F074), which had the following description:
'The Software Licensing Service reported that the computer could not be activated. No Key Management Service (KMS) could be contacted. Please see the Application Event Log for additional information.'

I am pretty sure that my version is totally genuine because over 100 people in my school bought the same laptop from my school at around the same time, the package was officially tendered from a company, which I had to pay for licensing for both Windows and Microsoft Office, and my school has an IT department that manages these things.

The product ID that was entered on my computer was 00371-XXX-XXXXXXX7-85053. I would like to know what is the problem and how do I fix it?

Hi, and welcome to Seven Forums.

This Microsoft KB article may be able to help.

When trying to activate you get 0xC004F074 with description "The Key Management Server (KMS) is unavailable"

Here's the download link for the hotfix mentioned in the KB article. You would use the Windows Server 2008 downloads (not the Itanium one) for Windows 7.

An update is available for Windows Vista and for Windows Server 2008 to extend KMS activation support for Windows 7 and for Windows Server 2008 R2

The Product Key here is a KMS Volume License Key which must be activated against the License-holder's own activation servers - and not Microsoft's servers.

If there is a COA sticker on the machine for Windows 7 Pro on the mahine's case (or in the battery compartment),

You need to change the Product Key to the one on the COA sticker on the machine's case (or inside the battery compartment), using the Change Product Key link at the bottom of the System properties page.


You may need to activate by phone.
