Hi,

Just want to learn a bit more-

Bought a new HP running W7 Home Premium, 64 Bit.
No Router, just hooked up to Comcast Broadband via their modem.
During the initial setup, had a devil of a time with it asking, several times, for Passwords, Log On names, etc.
Finally, established a connection, and all is fine.

Bought my son a HP PC as a birthday present.
Set it up yesterday.
He has a Router, as his wife also accesses their account with her laptop.
He uses Verizon.

The setup never asked for Any passwords to their Verizon internet account; really surprised.

Established an internet connection immediately.
How come ?

Are the Passwords to their Verizon account stored on the Router ?
Or,...?

Thanks,
Bob

Hi bob and welcome

Of the four or five types of broadband access only one requieres a user name and password. the others "know" the computer from it IP. Verizon FIOS knows because of its direct connection that that router is yoours.

If the router has broadcasted your wireless network with no security (no authentication), this is dangerous as anyone can tap in and use your network. This would the case when it won't ask for a password as no security has been setup for the network.
