ethernet cable not showing up in network adaptors

i have been using a linksys wireless WiFi usb port adapter to connect to the internet but wanted to recently connect to internet manually. When i plug in the ethernet cable, absolutly nothing happens. nothing pops up in bottom right of screen, and cant find local device. when i go to device manager network adapters is no where to be seen either. i have plugged ethernet cable into laptop and imediatly it worked, so its not the cable. i have searched all over the web but nobody else seems to be having the same problem. let me know if you need any information or screen shoots.

start computer and start tapping F2,or F1 or delete key to get to bios. could also be F10. then look in there for lan. it could say on the screen what key to press to get to setup.

i have a gaming g series msi computer, so the button was del. when i got in the menu there was a motherboard overlay and it showed that there was a eithernet port but i didnt know how to restart or do anything with it

i have asked for more help. not familiar with that type of bios. do not want to give you bad information. but if it was me i would look around in the bios and see if can find a setting for lan to be enabled or disabled. might not even have that in your bios. has the port ever worked?

Double check if there are Network Controllers or other devices showing in error (with a !) in Device Manager.

Go to the Support Downloads webpage for the model device or mobo (if it's onboard) and install the Ethernet or Chipset driver package.

Have you used ethernet before on the PC so you know whether it's a card or chip on the mobo? You may need to look at your mobo specs to be sure. But if it's not showing in Device Manager under Network Adapters or device in error then it needs enabling in BIOS, possible card reinstall, or new card.

Is the NIC on the motherboard or a second PCI card?

Do you have installation media for the Network Interface?

When you check Device Manager as in gregrocker's post #12, it may help to view hidden devices to see if there are any :warn: (warning's) You could also go back to view and click on Devices by connection and recheck the list. Don't forget to click on the arrows next to the device, it will show more devices.

You can leave the Show hidden devices checked or unchecked when you're finished, that is your call;

• Open Control Panel and click on Device manager to open it.

• Go to view on the menu bar and click on that.

• Go to Show Hidden Devices and click on it.

Sounds to me like a driver issue and if you can post what the machine specs are perhaps it might make things a little easier to sort out. Other than that maybe you could try a different Ethernet cable or it could just be a broken Ethernet port?

when i go to device manager network adapters is no where to be seen either.

I find it incredible that a MSI gaming machine doesn't have both wired and wireless NIC's properly installed and checked before it went out the door.

catnip, How long have you had this machine? Maybe you can RMA it.

Catnip mate the model number and some specs for that machine as a Google for a MSI gaming machine comes up with all laptop entries. I do reckon though you might have built this machine to so maybe the board model / version would be helpful.
So any specs will help if you get stuck use this

Using HW Info
PART A:
You can test the volts on the PSU with HW Info HWiNFO, HWiNFO32/64 - Download < download the right bit version and close the right hand window select Sensors and scroll down to the power section where you will see what the volts are doing see my pic. In my pic the section (Nuvoton) with VBATT is a dead give away you are in the section for the rail voltages. There are other section titles and one that pops up often is ITE
Now the voltage on the different rails have to be within 5% =+/- of what is required or the machine will not work properly if at all.

The original right hand window shows the machine running and is handy for that but for looking at the components in some detail close it and use the main left hand side panel

Open each small square with + in it on the section the components are in and then click on the individual component/s (it will highlight in blue) - in the right hand side will appear all sorts of details including brands speeds and other essential info that particular device. See pic for example.

Use PART B: In my pic I have shown the RAM click on and open out motherboard for yours and any other parts that are relevant - especially Network.
