So I just installed windows vista ultimate clean installed. I was running the release candidate before this.

The issue i'm having is that windows can't seem to install the drivers for my Ethernet adapter.

My computers a Dell dimension 9200. I've got to dells website and downloaded their driver and it doesn't do the trick.

My motherboard is an intel 0WG855
and my Ethernet adapter is an intel 82566DC

I downloaded this program called SIW and according to it the status of my network adapter is "disabled"

help would be swell
thanks

Did you run diagnostics via Netwrok and Sharing Centre?

Bottom right of screen>click the monitor icon> network and sharing centre and then click on the troubleshoot/diagnose link.

ya i've done that.

it tells me to plug in an ethernet cable (so i unplug replug)

then it says

problems found:
An ethernet cable is not properly plugged in or might be broken

I highly doubt my cable is broken considering it was working an hour ago when i was running the rc.

i've googled some updated drivers for my motherboard/ethernet adapter and nothing seems to be working yet.

when i right click all i can do is update driver software, disable, and uninstall which all do nothing.

When i go into the properties there is the message
"the drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)

There is no driver selected for the device information set or element

to find a driver for this device. click update driver"

I just tried doing the manual install from the link you gave me. The application installs something, then ends with a message
"to access new features, open Device Manager, and view the properties of the network adapters."

i go into the device manager, and under network adapters, i see the supposed ethernet controller "Intel(R) 82566DC gigabit network connection" BUT there is still the Ethernet controller with the yellow question mark in the other devices section. And my internet still doesn't work.

Download the file to my documents(or anywhere really, but somewhwere you know the path of the file).

Then update software driver manually

Type in the path that you download the driver to.

That should force the software onto the driver.

One trick that can be useful in this type of issue is when you un-install the existing drivers there should be an option to remove all files from disk or similar - this action can often enable a successful manual install.

"windows could not find driver software for your device

If you know the manufacturer of your device, you can visit its website and check the support section for driver software"

i uninstalled the intel 82566dc blah blah, with the option of deleting all that extra jazz. Then i uninstalled the ethernet controller (which gave me no additional options to remove all files).

at that point i scan for hardware changes. It now recognizes two ethernet controllers, one of which windows quickly installs as the intel 82566dc, and the other just remains with the yellow exclamation mark. still no god damn internet.

i tried running diagnostics again, and it still gives me the message "a network cable is not properly plugged in or may be broken". so i swapped it with another cord and it still doesn't work. WTF

I think the main issue here may well be the format of the driver package from Intel.

It would seem that it is the form of an executable installer, (file type exe or msi), the manual install process requires that the files be in the form of a number of files that actually make up the drivers, (normally .DLL with at least one .INF file).

The manual install need to locate the actual driver files, the issue we have is how to accomplish this?

When you run the installer do you have an option to create the files at a specific location, if so run the installer and create the files in a new folder on your desktop.

When you then go to manually install the drivers point to these files you have created on the desktop.

One other thing to try is to run the installer as an administrator and in compatibility mode for Vista SP1 (both options may be set by right click on the .exe and selecting compatibility

WOW i am an idiot

OK so i fixed the problem once i took a look see inside my computer.

I had forgotten that my network cable wasn't plugged into the motherboard but was infact plugged into a pci linksys adapter. I remember now cause it was linksys drivers i was looking for when i couldn't get internet on the release candidate.

So all i had to do was plug it into the motherboard instead and now it works. guna go now and see if i can actually find the drivers again for the linksys adapter.

THANKYOU so much for all the help, couldn't have done it without that intel link. Sorry for wasting your time with all that trouble at the end.

Cheers,
james
