Hello! So,im asking myself, what's the difference between ethernet and wireless when it's about gaming ? I know that ethernet is supposed to be better for ping, but is the difference that big ?
Im planning to connect my PC with my router with a ,obviously, cable.
Thanks :)

You're welcome. More than likely it will be better. Wired is also more consistent, with wireless you will get fluctuations.

Just did a little test for you.

Wired:

Wireless:

It did choose two different servers but I live in Wolverhampton and am a stone's throw from Birmingham. I play BF3/4 regularly too and get ping times of around 9ms, usually anything over 20ms is high for me and that's wired. I'll have to try wireless and see what happens then.

depends on a lot of of stuff.

depends on the ping the server is getting, your ISP, router, modem, wifi adapter, etc.....

if u can do wired, go for it. if not, then get yourslef a good wifi adapter.

heres my results. note- my wifi adapter on my laptop is only G speeds, so i dont get the full download speed. note- on my desktop N adapter, i get exactly the same speeds download, and slightly slower uploads. about 5mbps slower.

there are 2 types of ping on ethernet, you to your ISP, and ISP to server
there are 3 types of ping on wireless, you to your router, to your ISP, to server.

like i said, my wifi adapter is crap on my laptop, its always trying to save power and reduces its speed. but what i want to show you is ping. on my desktop, i notice 0 difference between wired and wireless. the only thing i do notice is slightly faster dl speeds in steam.

pic 1 - wireless to my router ping
pic 2 - wireless speed test
pic 3 - wired ping to my router
pic 4 - wired speed test

again, speed is limited on my laptop because of the adapter in it. i get exactly the same speeds and pings on my wireless desktop.

so yes, wireless is not as consistent as wired, however the result is only 1ms ping in real world games. a friend of mine play games together. he has 10x better internet than me and is on a wired connection. im on wireless. in games, i usually have less ping then him by 1-5ms; and he's rite next door to me.

Hi RazzerCro

I'm not a big gamer (but I do play some) and out of three desktops on line I use my main rig (wired) for gaming, I found stutters and lag with wireless.

If you're too far away from your router to hard wire, give powerline adapters a go.

those are not as fast as wired or wireless, however their connection is MUCH more consistent then wireless. also they can only be used in the wall outlet directly. can not use them in a extension.

I am somehow confused here... some of the wireless download times are even faster than those of the wired times??? that can not be true... can it?

those are not as fast as wired or wireless

They are 500MB/s, if anybody's got a connection faster than that then it may be a problem, but nobody has.

also they can only be used in the wall outlet directly. can not use them in a extension.

I have a set in my daughters' room with the PC end plugged into an extension and it works perfectly.
