.event files

Anyone have any idea on what .event files are. I just starting noticing when I create a new file of download something. There are .event files with the same name as the file.

Have you tried opening one with notepad?

Do they follow the main file if you copy it from one place to another?

Somehow Windows does keep track of the "origin" of files on your machine, I've not bothered actually trying to figure out how before. But Windows DOES know the difference between a file youcreated, one that was installed by a "trusted installer" and one that was downloaded from the web. Maybe that or something like it stored in those files (I always assumed it was stored in an alternate "data stream" of the main file)

You did mean ".event" and not ".evt" right?

Running any security software? Or something else you've installed? Creating ".event" files isn't something Windows itself does.

i tried to open one with notepad, but it appears to be blank.

I am using Microsoft Security Essentials as my AV.

Any more ideas? I was almost thinking something happened and now Windows has some sort of debugger running, that I can't seem to locate.

I cant see any trace of a .event file on my mahcine. And a casual google search didn;t turn up anything. It seems like it may be some third party program (or possibly security essentials)

so what are these .event files?
i'm seeing them all over the place, on multiple machines, in every folder (excluding stuff under C:\Windows, etc).

they are indeed empty files, so what purpose could they serve?

They could simply be a marker used by a program, an av program for example, to check the date/time of the last AV scan for that folder. Lots of prorgams use empty files to mark uh.. "events" THe existance of the file itself may have meaning as well as the data that is stored in the file system iteslf (last access dat/time for example).

.event files does not affect your system even if you delete this files.Lately, I was having a big problem.My HDD has a 500gb capacity and about 240gb free of space.Suddenly,a popup warning came up that my disk don't have enough space...oh man it become 980MB for the past few hours...terrible.So..I ran a troubleshooting..ran antivirus,defrag my HDD,defrag registry,ran Malwarebytes program,junk files cleaner..restart my pc..NOTHING!Good thing I have this program.. DISK ANALYZER PRO...I ran the program and I noticed the files and folders are growing big in size...it was my documents folder...that folder used to be 15gb only....suddenly it became 252gb in size.I look out inside the folder and I noticed that there are .event files in it.I delete few of them,I check my C drive capacity..and it's gaining a free space..I search them all and delete it by using a file shredder or any secure deletion method...After that I got my C drive space back to 240gb.My point is, you can delete .event files and worry nothing...it is safe to delete this files.

I deleted about 8,000 .event files in my system, i'm not sure what are they, but it will occupy your hard drive.Even a single mp3 file have this file inside the folder...
