Solved Event ID 7001 Service Control Manager causing slow logon

Hi guys! hoping for some pointing in the right direction here with an intermittent issue.

I use a Dell XPS17 with W7 Ultimate for work (which entails visiting various clients and login on to their networks via mapped drives (don't know if that is relevant to issue)).

Anyhow, some days on starting up the laptop, after I login to my profile, it hangs with a black screen for times between five and fifteen minutes or until I force a hard shut down (other days it starts up fine albeit slower than I would like!).

The days that this happens the Event viewer Administrative Events will show maybe 5,000 lines of
Event ID 7001 "The Computer Browser service depends on the Server service which failed to start because of the following error: The dependency service or group failed to start"
Log Name: System, Source: Service Control Manager.

Likes its continually attempting this same task until it gets a result or gives up..

Searches I have done regarding this issue return so many results (unrelated to my circumstances) I am struggling to see were to go to try and resolve it.

I appreciate this is a brief description of the issue but as I don't know what it is I don't know what is relevant to tell you..

My IT knowledge is pretty basic.

Thanks for a quick response.

I did look at that resource prior to my post for help BUT couldn't get past the first hurdle.

It advises;
"Type sc query service_name (where service_name is the name of the service) at th..."
I can only see that he service name is either 'Computer Browser' or 'Server' since these are the only two references to services I see in my 7001 event properties.

Using either of those in the sc query .... return 'EnumQueryServicesStatus:OpenService FAILED 1060: The specified services does not exist as an installed service'
so don't know what I am doing wrong and cant take it any further.

Have a tried Scannow a few days ago which returned no problems.
Ran disk check a couple of weeks ago with no problem but will run again as you suggest.
I have Malwwarebytes Pro installed and ran a check about three days ago last with no results but will do so again
I use Mcafee Security centre which returned no problems but will try the others you suggest

Get back as soon as done.

I use Kaspersky paid for at $013 a day a no brainer and it has the safe money feature which is just great.

The 7001 and 1060 errors could be an update problem, and McAfee (MAC) could also be in the mix. I've just finished with two threads that have it and they have problems with the Mac 2015 real-time scanners.

Here's one review:

McAfee offers great real-time virus protection, blocking almost every threat. System speed was severely compromised, however, in the process.

Yes mate I am just not a fan of the bloat AV's those stores put on and McAfee definitely not on my like list. See the list I the pic it might give you a few ideas

Mugel depends on whether you want a paid for or free but in my mind paid for is not as expensive as they sound if you work out how much per day they cost you. For example my Kaspersky on a good deal works out at $0.07 a day. But as always the choice is yours.

Anyway Anak has said it may be an update issue and I tend to agree. one thing you can do is to system restore and then work back with the updates until you find the culprit.

My thought was if it was company supplied, see if you could swap it out for a different machine and have the one that was swapped, checked for system updates, that now falls into your lap mb, and I would follow ICit2's advice.

One thing you could try before doing that is disable Site Advisor if its installed it sounds like a glorified WOT, and Anti-Spam, anything that would be considered real-time protection then test logging into your profile and see if that helps, MAC considers anything that wasn't born of its womb to be an intruder.
I would've advised to see if you could white-list your log-in, but it might be easier to just disable those parts of MAC or disable the whole program to test. You know your log-in isn't a malware site so if you only test for that and don't go anywhere else you would be safe.

If your log-in goes smoothly, you know MAC's the culprit.

I'm leaning a bit more towards an update problem, but I'd like you to do a check of your HDD.

Open an: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/783-elevated-command-prompt.html, and copy/paste/type: The chkntfs [your drive letter:] command, where drive letter is the drive against which you want to run the chkdsk command. If this command reports that the "dirty bit" is set, there may be real damage that has to be fixed. In your case the cmd would be chkntfs c:

You should see this if the HDD is not dirty. What do you, see?


Another item from your CHKDSK report that I'd like to point out, it isn't unusual or pose any serious concerns, but does hint at some problems. 0 KB in bad sectors, that you show at the end of your report is what you really want to see:

Well one test yo can try id this it takes a while but will rule out any surface damage and / or problms with the read / write heads.

HARD DRIVE SURFACE TEST

Now as opposed to the usual drive testersthis specifically tests the surface of (usually) a spinner.

It will test the surface of the spinningdisk, and I suspect some idea of the performance of the read / write heads.

Download this http://www.partitionwizard.com/free-partition-manager.html my pic will give you the instruction on what to do. It doestake some time but it does cover most possibilities with a drive in conjunctionwith the other testers like Seatools http://www.seagate.com/au/en/support/downloads/item/seatools-win-master/

I am not saying do it but it would eliminate and problem from the direction.

OK Will do but in the meantime I have had four start-up with much more reasonable Logon timescales without an Event ID 7001. I will have to keep an eye out now for any specific circumstances when it occurs e.g. particular sites or recent updates or whatever.
