I had to restart my machine after a update to iTunes. After the restart nothing was on my desk top, icons, Task Bar, Start menu ,sys tray, all gone. All I see is the wall paper. There is nothing to left click on. When I right click on the wall paper I get the standard drop down menu with , View, Sort by,Refresh, New,Screen resolution,Gadgets and they all work. When I start the machine in SAfe Mode ( EVERYTHING IS THERE) all icons, start menu, systray, task bar just as it should be and it all works as it should.

Does the start menu appear when you press the Windows key on your keyboard?
