Everything Greyed out in Problem Reporting Page & Win7 not turning off

Hi,

As the title says all the options are greyed out in the Problem Reporting Page Settings. I have downloaded the reg file from the thread below and it solved it but after rebooting the buttons were greyed out again!!

www.sevenforums.com/performance-maintenance/191332-win7-action-center-problem-reporting.html

I'm trying to sort out a problem and want to see if it will generate a report to send to Microsoft. The problem that I'm trying to sort out is that sometimes my Windows 7 won't shut down. It logs off ok but gets stuck on Shutting Down

How can I try to resolve this problem?

Win 7 SP1 64bit

Thanks for any help in advance.

Hi Shawn,

Thanks for your reply. I have followed the links but the parts where are should click are greyed out.
From the Windows Task Manager: Windows Error Reporting Service is stopped. When I right click on it to start it, I obtain Unable to start service: Access Denied.

Anything else to do? Am still trying to find out why computer won't shut down properly.

Does using OPTION TWO to enable Windows Error Reporting work better?

Hi Shawn,

Firstly let me say Happy Easter!!!

Sadly the reply to your is NO.

I have opened up the reg file that I downloaded and navigated, using regedit, to the entries to see what is there. Maybe because I can't really shut down the computer so it's not working? However, the reg file I downloaded from the thread in my first post worked without rebooting but it reverted back again after the reboot!!

Here is what I found in BOLD:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Error Reporting]
(default) Reg-sz (Value not set)

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Error Reporting]
"Disabled"=-
(default) Reg-sz (Value not set)
DontShowUI Reg-Dword 0x00000001 (1)

If you have any more ideas, I'd be grateful. Do you think it's worth doing a repair install?

Delete the DontShowUI DWORD in the right pane at the bottom location, and restart the PC to see if that does it.

Hi Brink,

I deleted it and then rebooted. The settings in the Program reporting are still the same!!
I have checked both reg entries to make sure it wasn't made again after the reboot and it wasn't, all there was in both was (default) Reg-sz (Value not set)

So despite me having to turn off the computer myself, the value was deleted. I'm sure that there must be some way to make and send an error report!!

If I can't solve this problem, I'll start another thread for my problem with not shutting down properly!!

What does it show in your "Problem Reporting Settings" window now?

For your shutdown issue, it would be best to create a new thread for it. Do you have anything still running when you shutdown?

No change

Hi,

There is no change in the Problem Reporting Settings. As you can see they are still all greyed out.

As for the shutting down problem it stops at "Shutting Down", that is what it says while shutting down but after 30 minutes or more it is still doing it.

It seems that the Group Policy Editor is not available for my version of 7 i.e. Home Premium

In that case if you like, you could download and merge the .reg file below to remove all policy settings in the registry for Windows Error Reporting, then restart to apply and see if that helps.

Was system restore an available option for the shutdown issue?

OK. I've merged the reg file you have given in your last post. Everything is still greyed out but the "Automatically Check for Solutions" whereas before it was on "Never Check"....I hope it stays this way after rebooting as well unlike last time!!
But why are the buttons greyed out still....I'm Admin

As for the computer not shutting down. I've narrowed it down to Daemon Tools Lite. After an update of this program it seems to have started. Rolling back to a previous restore point didn't help.
In the morning, I'm going to delete DTLite and see if that helps.....I have also now noticed that on booting up, the computer tries to install a software driver but fails. Again I will investigate this further tomorrow.

Well, that's a first step in the right direction. It appears something else is enforcing a policy, but at least it's set properly.

I hope it turns out to be DTLite causing the shutdown issue.

Update

OK Latest update. As I said in my last post, this morning I uninstalled DTLite and rebooted the computer 3 times. Each time the computer shut down properly. :D

However, it does appear that you are right Brink, something is enforcing the policy to grey out the options. It is back to square 1 after the first boot since I merged your reg file!!
Here are the entries from the Registry
Here is what I found in BOLD:
NB This first below is no longer exists in the registry; the 2nd has a new entry added!!
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Error Reporting]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Error Reporting]
"Disabled"=-
(default) Reg-sz (Value not set)
Disabled Reg_Dword
0x00000001 (1)
DontShowUI Reg-Dword 0x00000001 (1)

One other thing now.....Always something new everyday!!!

I'm now getting a message that windows is trying to Install a Device Driver Software each time I boot but the installation is unsuccessful with this message No Driver Found
In Device Manager Under OTHER DEVICES (with a Question Mark) there is a new entry "UNKNOWN DEVICE" with Yellow Exclamation Mark

How lovely.....
Thanks once again......
